J-Hud performing 'Invisible'. Upload courtesy of LKFB852. The guy who videoed this explains that he is a gay man so he got a little excited. He sings through the whole song.

It looks like the same "gay man" recorded all the songs. Beware...he's sings on every one of them. Glad to hear him enjoying himself.

Norfolk, VA tour stop review. Excerpt below.

Chrysler crowd treated to a flawless Hudson, a messy Thicke Posted to: Entertainment Music Norfolk

Robin Thicke and Jennifer Hudson's tour stopped in Norfolk on Easter Sunday, and the timing was completely apropos: The singers, as the parlance goes, "took it to church."

Well, Jennifer at least. Robin Thicke, who opened the show, offered up a set that was overall good but strangely messy at times. At one point he even stopped to perform maintenance on the piano. Still, Thicke was satisfying, though hardly holy as he whimpered in a falsetto like Prince and oozed sex like Marvin Gaye.

Hudson was flawless from start to finish, belting out hard and delivering the kind of skillful, meandering vocal runs and shrieks that make your jaw drop. You got the sense, especially during her bluesy, gospel medley, that Hudson earned her stripes bellowing out from a pulpit. And her congregation at Chrysler Hall, many still dressed in their Easter pastels, gave her exactly the down-home Southern Christian responses to which she is no doubt accustomed, like, "You better sing it girl!" She obliged spectacularly.

Thicke's opening sequence was jumbled from the start. As the curtains parted to the sounds of his song "Magic," viewers were distracted by the sight of a stage hand in the middle of the stage still trying to unwrap a cord from behind the baby grand piano. Awkward!

Thicke then sang his single "Wanna Love U Girl," and the rap in the middle that everyone - especially everyone in this market - knows is done by Pharrell Williams was farmed out to one of his keyboard players. Who was this guy? It was odd and a touch silly, like those kids' albums where someone who sounds nothing like the original artist raps a well-known song, robbing it of all its mojo. It was tragic.

Thicke's horn section was dismayingly effete, and his background singers seemed like they were plucked from Granby Street moments before the show. You couldn't hear them; they offered a seemingly worn Thicke little vocal support, and at one point they did the Electric Slide, a crime more heinous than their mousey singing.

Thicke started to get it together toward the middle of his set for "Sweetest Love" and "Teach U a Lesson." "Dreamworld," his song about a world free of racism and poverty, was perfect; his interrupting the set to say, "Something's wrong with the piano. It sounds different. Can y'all hear that? Steve?" was definitely not.

Thicke closed with "Lost Without U," his monster soul ballad, to a crowd on its feet, swaying and singing and having forgiven him for making rookie mistakes he's long had time to correct.

Hudson made no rookie mistakes on this, her first tour. As the curtains parted we found Jennifer atop a staircase, coming down singing "One Night Only." A writer could spend hours combing a thesaurus for the words to accurately describe her voice, but the best ones are probably the most simple: crisp, clear, forceful and phenomenal. The crowd was on its feet.

Of course, with J-Hud having just one album and only really one hit single, the songs from her relatively recent debut album went over many people's heads. When she sang "We Gon' Fight," though, she said that fighters pulled her through, a comment one can only infer was about the murder of her family members last year. Hudson then did a tribute to "her favorite divas," including Aretha Franklin ("Giving Him Something He Can Feel") and Chaka Khan ("Sweet Thing").

Hudson's voice, it must be said again, was something to behold, and the crowd sat, at some points, astonished. By the time she did a gospel medley and another "Dreamgirls" number and then "And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going," one had to wonder how much more vocal athleticism Jennifer could perform. What else could she do for these people, shriek until her head exploded? The more she gave, the more insatiable they became. Nonetheless, she killed the song, and without popping a blood vessel.

She finished with her hit "Spotlight," which was fitting, because if she continues with shows like this, this diva-in-training will be standing under them for a long time to come.

Jennifer Hudson’s big voice fills the Landmark

By Melissa Ruggieri

Published: April 20, 2009

Though technically a double bill of two young, respected soul singers, there was little doubt who ruled the Landmark Theater stage last night.

http://www.timesdispatch.com/rtd/entertainment/music/article/JENN20_20090419-233604/260344/

Jennifer Hudson and Robin Thicke are a well-matched touring pair, with each bringing an arsenal of charms -- a roaring voice and personable stage demeanor for her, a sweeping falsetto and loverboy charisma for him.

But while the sold-out crowd of more than 3,500 mostly sat and nodded politely during Thicke's uneven hour-long set, the audience was on its feet to give Hudson, 27, an ovation the moment she sang the opening lines of "One Night Only" while descending a staircase.

Her too-brief 60 minutes on stage were mostly spent showcasing a voice that is so giant, it sometimes bordered on shrill.

But even though restraint isn't in Hudson's vocabulary -- as it isn't for most singers with her type of vocal gift -- she engaged the crowd with the emotional "You Pulled Me Through," a power ballad that has to contain multiple meanings for Hudson, given the tragedy of losing part of her family last year.

Because she only has one album, cover songs were as expected as they were necessary.

Clad in black leggings and a short, sequined black dress, the lovely Hudson turned a trio of tunes from En Vogue ("Giving Him Something He Can Feel"), Chaka Khan ("Sweet Thing") and Whitney Houston ("You Give Good Love") into an interactive experience, handing the microphone to several members in the crowd to sing.

Thicke, meanwhile, opened the show with his own hour-long set that illustrated how he has grown since his last appearance in Richmond, at The Canal Club a couple of years ago.

Though his first songs sounded flat, Thicke flourished once he utilized his falsetto.

The 32-year-old heartthrob knows how to work a stage, which he did to the point of sweating through two shirts, and also possesses admirable dance moves, which he showcased during "Sidestep."

It was also welcome whenever Thicke sat behind his piano for a lush ballad ("Dreamworld") instead of leaping around during the silly rock/rap hybrid "Shooter," a wannabe-gangsta song composed with Lil Wayne that is the complete opposite of all that the crooner embodies.
