Re: Jennifer Hudson to tour with Robin Thicke!
Here's a review from the Chicago April 25, 2009 show. Excerpt and link provided below.
Jennifer Hudson makes homecoming concert a family affair
April 26, 2009
BY KEVIN ALLEN kjallen@suntimes.com
The Englewood home where Jennifer Hudson grew up is eight miles from the Arie Crown Theatre at McCormick Place. But the journey from the former to Saturday night's performance at the latter is nothing short of epic.
The Chicago stop wasn't your average show on Hudson's tour. How could it be?
Jennifer Hudson preforms Saturday night at the Arie Crown Theater.
(Keith Hale/Sun-Times)
JENNIFER HUDSON
with Robin Thicke
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
7:30 p.m. Sunday
Arie Crown Theater, 2301 S. Lake Shore Drive
Tickets: $49.50-$75
(312) 559-1212
After all, Saturday night marked Hudson's first homecoming as a headlining performer. It was also her first public performance here since her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew were senselessly murdered nearly six months ago to the day in that same Englewood home where her talent first blossomed.
She didn't address that situation directly -- or the circulating rumors of her pregnancy, for that matter. She did, however, dedicate the song "You Pulled Me Through" to her family members who were in the audience.
From there, Hudson continued to make her show a family affair. She even welcomed four of her cousins to the stage to sing a pair of a capella spiritual songs that brought the audience to its feet.
"This," Hudson said, referring to her cousins, "is where I come from."
Hudson's voice was flawless from the opening notes of "One Night Only" to the final extended notes on the lyric, "You're gonna love me," from "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going." She displayed the vocal range and distinctive style that audiences fell in love with on "American Idol" and flocked to theaters to hear in "Dreamgirls."
Her stamina was especially impressive considering she's nearly a month into her tour with Robin Thicke.
For his part, Thicke played the part of ideal opening act. Dressed in head-to-toe black with hair tousled just so, he managed to woo women of all ages in the audience with a bit of PG-13 girating. It takes a special sort of man to sing falsetto and maintain bravado, but Thicke pulled it off. He covered Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" and delivered an surprisingly enjoyable a capella version of Jodeci's "Come and Talk to Me."
But there was no mistaking that this was Hudson's night. With her beaming fiancee David Otunga videotaping from the front row, light bounced hither and yon from her engagement ring, dangling earrings and beautiful black sequin dress.
Both literally and figuratively, Hudson shined.
Forget that she's a Grammy and Academy Award-winning performer whose lightning-fast rise to diva status is a thing of legend. Forget for a moment that she's endured family tragedy most of us couldn't imagine in our worst nightmares.
When you strip away the celebrity accoutrement surrounding Jennifer Hudson and see her simply as a performer on a stage, one quickly realizes that they are witnessing one of the premiere talents of a generation. And as with the divas who paved the way for Hudson, those who saw Jennifer Hudson's triumphant return to Chicago will someday tell their children and grandchildren, "I saw her. Live. In concert."
And she was simply sensational.

Here's another review from the Chicago stop of tour. Excerpt and link to article provided below.
Dense Hudson on Thicke Double Bill
April 28th, 2009 ·
(Photo: When bad concerts happen to good cousins…)
Most odd, though, was Hudson’s continual appeals–orders, really–for the crowd to welcome and cheer her family members. There were many opportunities to do so. At least a dozen times during her barely 60-minute performance, Hudson handed her microphone away to cousins in the first row, allowing them to warble their way through one painful line, verse, or chorus after another.
The nadir came when Hudson invited a four-cousin singing troupe onstage to power through the Beatles’ “Let It Be”. They did a stunning job. Hudson could have left it there. Instead, she told them to sing another song, and then in her most bizarre move of the evening, walked offstage for five minutes.

Here's a account of Robin's fan encounter after party at the Rednofive Nightclub in Chicago. Excerpt below.
Robin Thicke Grooves with His Fans at His Official After Party at Chicago Night Club
On Saturday, April 25, 2009, Shon-Gale Events and Publicity, LLC teamed up with Wind Tunnel Entertainment, Intertwine Chicago, and Patrick Entertainment to deliver the only Official Robin Thicke After Party at Rednofive, 440 N. Halsted, Chicago, IL. This event followed Robin Thicke’s sold out concert with Jennifer Hudson at Arie Crown, and was co-hosted by Robin Robinson of Fox News.
Robin Thicke arrived at the club shortly after midnight and immediately stopped to take photos with Robin Robinson of Fox News, Shon Peebles and Gale Farley of Shon-Gale Events and Publicity, Ron Blanchard of Wind Tunnel Entertainment, and Tamara Allen of Intertwine Chicago in front of sponsor, First Choice Media, banner. The photos were taken by Snapp Photography.
He bypassed the massive crowd and was escorted via the lower level of the club up to VIP smiling, stopping for photos and shaking hands with those in VIP, including Chicago Defender staff , Shirey Cadillac rep , Jennifer Day of First Choice Media , and Stacy of Stacy Bowie Designs before heading to his table. Stacy greeted him with a gift bag of personal stationary for himself and his wife to enjoy later.
Robin continued to take photos with all the fans that requested one with the brown-eyed heart throb until he decided enough was enough. Many of the photos were also taken by various local news media and photographers including Creative XXX.
Robin was escorted to his area in VIP and treated to a gourmet spread provided by Jordan’s Food of Distinction. Surrounded by his manager, body guards, and fans, he listened to Universal artist, Melanie Fiona, before taking the mic himself and treating the crowd below to his own performance. The fans went wild! Many of which continued to take photos as he reached down to hug a fan or two.
Frequently seen grooving to the music and singing along with other Hip Hop and R&B hits, Robin seemed to be in his own element at the club, enjoying the party as much as anyone.
After nearly three hours partying, Robin exited the club as graciously as he entered, stopping many times again to shake hands and take photos with his fans.

Re: Jennifer Hudson to tour with Robin Thicke!
Here's some comments from concert goers who attended the Albany Show. Excerpt below. Follow link for entire article. Looks like there are some people out there that's not afraid to give an honest opinion be it considered good or not. Long as they keep it real. It's called constructive criticism. Hopefully J-Hud will learn from the mistakes of this (her first) concert. In the long run...it's all good.
Let’s get real the Jennifer Hudson/Robin Thicke show was a travesty and a sham. Robin Thicke cannot sing. You may subsribe to all the industry hype and selectively ignored all this guy’s shortcomings(and there are many)but the bottom line is he is a fraud. He has pitch problems in every range. His songs are for the most part forgettable, simplistic three chord nonsense. As for his stage act, he is fledgling Justin Timberlake wannabe. Now lets talk about the sound crew and that totally amateur band. The mix for Thicke’s band was a textbook example of what a sound engineer should never do. Volume was only a fraction of the problem, but you can also add the overbearing, unfocused, low end. So much so, I was hard pressed to tell what notes the bass player was playing or what key the songs were in sometimes between Thicke’s pitch issues and the mix. The band were rank amateurs in every area. There are cover bands in bars right now who blow this band out of the water. Aside from the three lap tops running for both shows, which suggests to me, alot of what we were hearing was not being produced by the stage performers. Jennifer Hudson is a really talented singer who has no act. The volume of her performance was deafening with zero and I mean zero dynamics. You don’t go out as a headliner when you have to scrap for an hours worth of material. The cover tunes while adequately performed were throwaways and nothing more than filler. The sing-a-long nonsense was pure crap!! The Dreamgirls material while vocally impressive is already tired and overwraught. When she left the stage for the obligatory Vegas costume change and returned with “I believe in Music” that was the last straw for me. I left disgusted and $120 poorer. She recently indicated she wanted to concentrate on her music. She should because last night she proved she is only a short few steps from her cruise ship days. Oh and it was not a sell-out. Maybe on the books, but not in reality.

everyone else enjoyed it..sell out or not.. doesn’t matter And bert or whatever your name is.. anyone who has the time to sit up there and right all that obviously has no life lol..

“everyone else enjoyed it?????” Sorry, don’t think so Lisa…
When we left at Jennifer’s “break”, 4 other people walked out at the same time….and all 4 complained of the “volume” being totally over the top!!! These were seasoned “concert goers” so sound is not a problem for them. Jennifer Hudson has a powerful voice, and is obviously a great performer; however, the band left a lot to be desired; possibly, the Palace’s acoustics are simply not equipped to handle such volume. I, personally, like to understand the “words”, and the volume was so loud, I think both Thicke and Hudson could have foregone the mics totally!!!! As for the “warm up” performer, could have done without him!!! And as for Thicke, I think Hudson could have made a better choice of performers to take on tour……oh well, it’s her first, and perhaps they’ll work out the “kinks” as they go….

Having traveled 2 1/2 hours to see this show and the first time to visit this venue, I can assure you, it will be my last. The show was advertised to start at 7:30. When we walked in at 7:20 to the loud obnoxious DJ, we thought - oh well, it will only last 10 minutes. Wrong…we suffered through 40 minutes of it. We were relieved that Robin Thicke would take the stage and we could enjoy some music. Wrong again. The band was so loud you couldn’t hear any of his lyrics and putting up with an hour of him, with no stage act, was almost insufferable. However, we looked forward to Jennifer, although there was a 40 minute gap between acts. Her voice is incredibly powerful and we at least could hear most of her lyrics over the band, but again it was so loud it was not in the least bit enjoyable. We left almost deaf by the overpowering noise. I don’t know who is at fault - the venue for being too small for that amount of equipment or the band for not toning it down. I feel my money ($160) was ill spent and I will not go back to the Palace again, nor will I go to another concert featuring Thicke. Although I’m still a big fan of Jennifer, I will listen to her on my IPod instead of paying to hear her live

Re: Jennifer Hudson to tour with Robin Thicke!
Here's another review/comment from a concert goer. You can find the actual comment in the link provided below.
I saw the Hudson/Thicke concert last night (April 9) at the MGM Grand @ Foxwoods in Connecticut. Many of the comments made above proved true about what I saw last night. The sound didn’t appear to be such an issue here as in Albany, but then again, this is a new venue with great sound at this concert and a previous one I attended (John Legend in February). I am a fan of both Hudson and Thicke, but as stated before, they are both in need of some direction and a stage act. They both came out, sang their songs, and gave little thought to any rapport with the audience. What they did do was straight out of Vegas Lounge Act 101. These two performers have way too much talent to be wasted on anything less. Thicke’s weaknesses were amplified on the big stage whenever he used his falsetto voice. Thanks to his sound engineer, it’sreally effective and sensitive on his CD…not so nuch in person. His dancing is laughable. He’s trying to bring his act to a new level with this tour and he needs to up his performance skills…and that includes dancing, if he’s trying to compete with the likes of Justin Timberlake (having seen JT, that’s just not gonna happen). The gyrations were at odds with the sophisticated blue-eyed soul he’s trying to project on his CDs, and looks like he’s been taking dance lessons from Tom Jones. Jennifer Hudson had the odd habit of starting each of her songs with her back to the audience. She maintained this position for several bars into the music then slowly turned around to sing to the audience. This happened song after song. Yes, the girl can sing, and it truly is a gift that she’s got, but the performance needs work. She had no costume change, apparently listening to you in Albany, and she switched her encore song to “And I’m Telling You,” but as other reviewers stated, she still doesn’t pace herself throughout the 60 minute show. Each song was sung at full steam ahead, loud and amazing, but no variety. Several reviews stated that the tour started in Albany, and they were willing to excuse the short-comings because of that. I don’t buy that philosophy at all. No one should have to go through what she has during the past year and maybe this tour should have been delayed a few more months. It’s hard to make excuses and cut some slack for performers that are charging premium prices and not delivering 110% professional show. I’ll stick to their CDs for awhile and certainly think twice before seeing either one of them in concert again anytime in the near future.

Re: Jennifer Hudson to tour with Robin Thicke!
Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles May 2, 2009 show review. Excerpt below. Click on link to view entire review.
Jennifer Hudson and Robin Thicke shared a few things Saturday night at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live: a band, a semiformal approach to fashion and, of course, an audience. Bringing their national tour to the city where Thicke grew up the son of entertainers and Hudson became an "American Idol" finalist and movie star, the pair proved complementary though the less ostentatiously talented Thicke threatened to outshine his young queen of a co-headliner, offering a stronger show if not as many out-of-the-park high notes.
Hudson sought to fulfill this mandate with giant ballads, a few sassy moments that played on her youth and earthy sense of humor, and fancy guest stars, including Chaka Khan, Philip Bailey and Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire and Raphael Saadiq. (Khan joined Hudson in a rendition of her own "Sweet Thing"; the gentlemen callers stood by while Hudson sang "Happy Birthday" to her manager and gave him a cake.)
Hudson didn't quite attain her goal; her set was too short and strangely disjointed, as if she were checking items off a to-do list rather than building an emotional arc. But there were enough high points to please her growing flock.
