Review: Jennifer Hudson, Robin Thicke showcase R&B stylings at Orpheum

On their current tour, Jennifer Hudson and Robin Thicke share a backing band and star billing. But playing before a sold-out crowd at the Orpheum Theater on Monday night, the pair split on their approaches to modern R&B, with one delivering a high-energy performance heavy on the dance grooves while the other sang to the cheap seats in a pitch for full-blown diva-hood.
Jennifer Hudson seemed more comfortable performing cover versions and numbers from "Dreamgirls" than songs off her own album.
For Hudson, embarking on her first-ever tour, the stakes were arguably higher as the Academy Award-winning “American Idol” runner-up sought to justify all the hype that preceded the release last year of her eponymous debut album. Hudson has catapulted past most other “Idol” contestants based, in part, on her own compelling personal narrative. A fan favorite in the talent show’s third season, she ultimately came in seventh but came out on top the next year when she won the prized role of Effie in the screen adaptation of the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls,” taking home an Oscar for her efforts.
[color=green]On all these songs, Hudson belted with the power of a superstar in the making. Oddly, she seemed less comfortable performing songs from her album. The fault was not her own, however. Numbers like the generic Diane Warren power ballad “You Pulled Me Through” and the Beyoncé wanna-be single “Pocketbook” aren’t of the same caliber even of the often-awkward “Dreamgirls” material.[/color]

Sharing at its Best: Jennifer Hudson & Robin Thicke
Not only did Jennifer Hudson and Robin Thicke share the stage Monday night at the Orpheum, they shared a band, backup singers, a casual approach to fashion (both wearing all black) and the audience.
Both Grammy Award winning artists put their own spin on R&B, producing styles all their own. Thicke opened the concert with contemporary R&B, using his unique falsetto voice and sensual dance moves to win over the crowd and Hudson followed with a soulful R&B performance. The pair was truly complementary. Hudson controlled the stage with her undeniable voice while Thicke and the band entertained.
