not true.. The only dread i've left from my first set is now almost a year and a half old. And right now the parts of dread that were tight as hell became looser ( again) became allot thicker and a bit softer..not like soft..but jsut a bit more squeesable..

It's something I noticed when I still had all my dreads from my first set.

hair grows, after some length from the root it'll knot.. It will knot verry tight... so it looks like your roots are thinning out (which isn't true at all) than after a while when that tight part grows further away from your head...say 1 or 2 inch it starts to relax it seems.. it's tightness becomes less.. they 'll become fatter and a bitt softer.

It's like a 2nd shrinkage fase.. although this will happen everytime/all the time when dreads grow longer and become fatter
