i may be being very ignorant but doesn't part of the rastafarian religion preach that king rastafari will eventually come back and take all the black people up to heaven leaving all other races here?

yes, you are correct. That is a basic tenant of the Ethiopian Orthodox church, which is indeed the original church of the rastafari, and the church that the emporer Haille Sellassi defends. Rastafari follow most of the church with the esception of accepting Jesus as savior, and believe that The Emporoer is the Son of God incarnate. The rastafari is a spin off so to speak of the orhodox church, which is one of the oldest established Christian church in the world (think Coptic). In 2002 or so the rastafari sect of the orthodox church adopted a new tenant that accepted that white people could be called "African at heart" but they were not rastafarian because they are not black.
