haha yeah man, they're so pricey. They've got so much better in recent years... I still wouldn't substitute for an acoustic kit, but they are very good. I played a huge TD-20 set up in a shop once and it was insane. So much fun.
For a practice pad use a pillow or cushion sometimes. It makes you work 10 times harder than playing on a hard surface, and when you get back on the kit your hands fly
