7/31/09 - LPS
I tell you what, I didn't think Saturday night was ever going to end! Usually, I don't want race nights to end, but the end of Saturday couldn't have come soon enough! Don't get me wrong, it was a good night racing wise, just long and wet!
On the way to the track, we had to pull over for me to remove my seat cover because it started raining. It looked absolutely horrible! We continued to the track and the pits were packed! That's something that LPS hasn't seen in a while! So, we found a parking spot and started getting things unloaded and went out for hot laps. What are hot laps, anyway? Well, my understanding is that they are a few laps to see what the track is like and to make sure that there are not any major problems with your car. There was no way to tell anything about the track or the car on Saturday night, EXCEPT that the track had WAY too much water on it. It was a slick snotty mess. Noone could get on the gas at all, not even a little bit. All you did was spin your tires. The bad thing was that there were over 60 cars that had been on the track before the Super Stocks did and it was still that way!
OK, so on to the heat races! There were 4 sprint car heats, 3 modified heats, 2 super stock heats and 3 bomber heats. Towards the end of the 3rd sprint car heat, it started raining. They finished that heat and pulled the cars off the track. The trucks all got out to work the track while it was raining. After a little while they started to put the sprint cars back on the track to iron it in and to get the final heat race run. Of course it started raining again. We waited a little longer, then they called for the modified drivers to line up for their heat races. The track was so slick that the trucks could not keep it straight. The modifieds ironed and hot lapped by heat race to work the track in. I was so ready to load the car and go home, it was not even funny! Even in the final session of modifieds, they were still spinning their tires even on the straight aways. Finally, by the third modified heat race, it started looking like a raceable surface to me. They ran the final sprint car heat and then onto the super stocks. I was in the 2nd heat race on row 4. On the original start, several cars that were in the outside lane were involved in an acident pulling the caution and a restart. That moved the outside lane up, putting a couple of the stronger drivers in the front. We got restarted and the rest of the race was pretty uneventful. It was still slick, but was working in nicely. I finished third.
The feature was straight-up on the re-draw and I was to start outside row 3. By feature time, the track was actually taking rubber and looked pretty good on the bottom. The top was rutty and not worked in too well. The feature contained several cautions, mostly from guys getting together in the back of the pack. There were 2 times that someone tagged me in the rear and almost spun me out, however, I was able to keep going and got my spot back due to others cars in the back pulling the caution flag. Thank goodness! I also almost spun myself out cutting too close to the tires in turns 1 & 2 once, but again managed to keep my spot because of others pulling the caution. I fought for the 3rd & 4th spots for several laps with Jim Moore #K4 and Slick Griffin #G2. I finished 4th. Kenny Carmichael Jr. #3, Doug McCollough #19, Moore #K4, and Griffin #G2 were the top 4 ahead of me.
Not a terrible night, but a long night! See you next week!!!
