Manga - The Good The Bad & The Ugly

Thought I'd start a thread on manga titles for discussion and recommendation, similar to the comics title as so many here are into anime and Japanese import figures. I still drop about $100 a month on printed comics, usually from Amazon, but I still support my local store when I can. Most of the stuff I read is manga, and I read a wide variety of stuff, from Dr. Slump (yes, Dr. Slump) to Battle Royale.

Anyway, my current fave ongoing manga is Dark Horse's "Eden - It's an Endless World"... if you haven't read it, it isn't for the faint of heart. Unflinchingly violent & some graphic sexiness. The art is great, and it really reminds me of Appleseed & Akira. If they ever make a 1/6 of Kenji, the heartless merc with the knives, I'd buy it.

I recently discovered "The Drifting Classroom" from Viz and that is pretty cool too. A school with all the students in it gets mysteriously teleported into some weird future alternate dimension and they have to deal with monsters and psychos. There's never a dull moment, the kids always seem to be faced with some new relentless threat chapter after chapter. In the last volume I've read, bubonic plague claims the lives of about half the kids. It's a reprint of a very old manga and holds up surprisingly well.

"Monster" from Viz is my third fave. Some sequences were quite moving to me and it has brought a tear to my eye a couple of times. My wife thinks I'm weird to cry over a manga. Will Dr. Tenma ever be able to stop Johan?

The Fullmetal Alchemist manga is awesome! I highly recommend it. It's quickly become one of my fave mangas.

I just read all of what's currently been translated by Viz Comics. Now I have to wait like everyone else to find out what happens next.

B/c of the manga, I went out and bought both Alphonse & Edward Medicoms this week. Roy Mustang will be on my figure list too, if he (ever) comes down in price. Just not enough accessories for me to justify the $175 price tag. I wish they would make a King Bradley (Wrath) figure too, complete with 5 swords, eyepatch and two outfits, but that sounds like more something Hot Toys would do, and not Medicom. What an insane villain! I actually feared for the Elric Brothers' lives anytime Wrath was around.

Yes, I know, I've been living under a rock to just discover FMA now. emoticon

Deathnote - just finished reading the 12 volume series... emoticon

It was waaaaaaay toooooo slooooooowwww... and was a chore reading the last few volumes. The anime seems to be much better.

I can't recommend this.

lolz....yr the first person that I know of said Death Note is boring. Maybe its because theres too many thoughts n dialouge to be read. This is one of my fav manga and I love how the plot runs and how Light & L manage to battle it out with each other.

I think the story was good until L died and they had to introduce Near & Mello which just made the whole story lost alot of charm.

Don't worry Jun, I still like you! emoticon

Sometimes it felt that it was just page after page of Kira & Mello/Near talking to themselves. Near the end there, the only interesting thing about the book for me was the "How to Use" notes and seeing what toys Near was going to play next while trying to prove Light was Kira.

I guess it just wasn't for me!

errr...yr not gay are u?

haha just joking :P
U ever watched the live-action movie for Death Note and its spin-off L:Change the World?

There are two parts to the live-action movie. They did re-write a number of things to make it different from the manga. Personally, I felt part 1 to be boring but part 2 to be good as it had an unexpected twist to its ending too. Then again, u will still need to catch both movies to have a complete understanding of the movie storyline. (the best thing about the movies are the cute girls & beautiful wommen in it though emoticon )

The spin-off movie is nice too but may be abit draggy at some points.

Nope, I'm not gay, why? emoticon

I don't think I'll return to the Death Note world anytime soon. I did like the anime quite a bit, which is why I went to check the manga out, but for this series, I'd have to recommend folks to check out the anime, and not the manga.
