Old Snake Custom W.I.P.!!

Hey guys, I'm not exactly new here as I signed up a couple of months ago but this is my first post. The purpose of this thread is to showcase the work I do on my Medicom RAH Old Snake figure.

I picked him up last year from gatackfc whom I actually never got around to thanking as I got caught up with school; great guy, great business ethic = smooth transaction.. highly recommended!

Anyway! After months of deliberation, I've decided to cut him up. Here is a picture of him in an unaltered state:

Well okay, unaltered isn't exactly right. Here you can see a clear incision on his back. Logically examining the suit, I reasoned that the suit probably had a one piece zipper that ran along that line in the back so that's where I cut it. I didn't do the best job of closing it though. emoticonemoticon it looks sooo bad.

I cut him originally to get into the underbody, examine what I was working with and I ended up stuffing the hell out of the suit. The result is a snake that doesn't bunch up so much at joints (evident in the first picture underneath the bicep, notice it bunches at a lower point than usual) and it gave me an opportunity to tighten the joints up at the same time. Still, the articulation is NOT what it should be as I'm sure all Old Snake owners are aware. I'm one of those function over form guys, I want Snake to move and if he can't, I don't want Snake, simple as that.

As you know, he's got those "mesh" looking areas, those are the ones I'm cutting out. I'll experiment with a couple of ideas and I should have pictures of attempted ideas in a couple of days.

You know, they REALLY have. It should've been at least.. ten times better.

Which brings me to what I've done so far, I cut off all the mesh parts and this is what he looks like:

So as you can see, not the most beautiful looking thing on earth... but the articulation is LIMITLESSLY BETTER! It's no mystery that RAH bodies are well-articulated, but the difference cutting the mesh parts makes is huge. For those of you who own snake, you know you can't pose his arms more than 90 degrees.. in the above picture you can see that he's almost got his gun stock to his shoulder! I would've been able to get the correct angle if he had some wrist articulation, but he doesn't.

Observations about the body underneath:
- the original body is way too small and skinny to fill out the suit properly.. hence, weird movement of the suit over the body and bunching at articulation points
- he has a one piece body suit underneath the octocamo suit that is basically just a black spandex-type material and it uses velcro along the back to close.
- he has the wrist articulations that MGS3 snake came with but in this case, they're too short to reach into the hands to make a difference.

Anyway, more progress to come.. I've been feverishly shopping around for fabric with the right size holes so I can remake the suit. I'm also planning on remaking some of the underbody components, adding articulated fingers with wrist motions and casting the boots into a more pliable material so he can make use of that ankle and toe articulation.

Question on the last point though: to anyone who's ever made casts of anything, does anyone know if the materials which are used for casting will react badly/poorly to the rubber-ish material that the boots/suit is made out of?

Well, more to come soon hopefully!

Wow, I was thinking to do the same for my old snake, but I don't have the nerve to cut the octocamo suit emoticon
