Re: Town Centre on its last legs ?
Melksham has been dying a death for at least the last 20 years that I know of. I once had to do a survey we where let of George ward school and in town to ask people where they shopped. And people said Chippenham. And that was 20 years ago.
I pefer Chippenham on a sunday, free parking and lots of shops. You go in melksham town and there is nothing open. Ohh iceland, Sainsburys and Somerfield. And they shut down the blinking kwiksave down.
You want to go to the cinema you have to chippenham or devizes or if you want a multi- plex then 20 odd miles to swindon.
I am begining to wonder why I move back after living away from the area for the last 13 years.Oh that could be because I wanted to move back to be closer to my family.
If you want to go to a nice pub there is no where in town. Sorry but nearly all the pubs in town are holes of the worst kind. I do like the cornerstone coffee shop but it shuts at 4.30pm.
I have been to the library before on late opening and by 5.30pm melksham is dead. And I do mean dead everything is shut up.
Ohh I mean Lloyds shuts down and we get superdrug. I can hardly contain my delight
They want to build more houses. But why there is nothing for people here to do or see or even to be truthful buy. So people will go out of town. Taking the money with them.
We need some decent shops and maybe a Tescos, Asda or even a Morrisons more local then the 7 miles a way in Trowbridge or in Devizes.
Melksham is turning in to a ghost town and it is not going to get any better. Do we really need 7 hairdresses. Nope I kid you not I counted them all up and that is just in town.
I mean you even use to be able to park in what I call the library car park for free after 3pm on saturday. Not any more they now charge you up 6pm. And some more free parking like behind Iceland one hour free parking.
Come on Melksham get a grip because if we don't there is not going to be a town centre.
If you want a haircut or to get a takeaway you are fine. But if you want to do some DIY or buy wallpaper etc. You have to go else where.
Yours
Calley

Re: Town Centre on its last legs ?
Hi Cally,
Bath has a multiplex and I believe Trowbridge is getting one soon? I know its not quite the same but they are showing some of the latest releases ie Crash and Chicken Little in the assembly hall next friday, at least Melksham is trying, all we need to do is support these people who do make an effort to make our community a better place.
Look at the recent sucess of the Carnival and the party in the park over the past few years, this is a sucess Melksham should build on,Chippenhams carnival folded several years ago due to lack of support, so its not all bad

Re: Town Centre on its last legs ?
Oops forgot about the one that opened in Bath the last year or so.
But that is still 36 mile round trip hardly what I call local. How long have them talking about getting a cinema in trowbridge years. And it will be years before we get it.
Yes the carnival was success. But there are to many shops that are closing. We have had blazes shut down recently and Amber electrics moving and leaving a shop empty and where wishing well gowns where has been shut and empty for well over a year.
In a town centre I want to be able buy most things. I mean 7 hairdressers and 3 insurance brokers. Seems like rather over kill to me.
I am from the area as I grew up and lived in the area until I was 21.
I know I moved back of my own free will. But is saddens me that to do ordinary mundane things like go to my bank I have to leave melksham. Which costs me in time and money.
To me if they want to build more houses then they need to get some deals with some retailers to come in to the area.
Another supermaket is must or at least opening longer hours. Maybe I have been spolit a bit where I use to live where two supermarkets opened 24 hours and the rest open until 10pm. In melksham if you want to go grocery shopping after 8pm then forget it. You have to hike it over to trowbridge.
I know it is slightly more rural but with out the services people are going to move away.
They are building houses like there is no tomorrow and there is nothing for people to spend money on to keep it in the melksham area.
Melksham "wealth" is reliant on to few businesses. Heaven forbid if The Avon ( I know it is cooper tires but I have always know it as The Avon)shut down or moved.
I am happy to support local businesses. You have two greengrocers, two bakers and one butchers. Which is a start. But what about an proper decent off-licence?
What I don't want is Melksham to turn in to a identkit highstreet that you can get else where.
It is going to be a long slow road and is going to take years. But if something is not done now we are still going to be sitting here saying the same things again and again and again.
Yours
Calley

Re: Town Centre on its last legs ?
Its just winge winge winge on here!
Melksham is stuck between Chippenham and Trowbridge, it wouldn't be effective for retailers such as Currys, WH Smith, H Samuels etc to have 3 stores in such a small area...thats capitalism i'm afraid. And personally I'd much rather drive to Chippenham or Trowbridge than live there!

Re: Town Centre on its last legs ?
I have to agree. Although Melksham is a great place to live, the shops are pretty poor. It's not really any hassle to get to Trowbridge or Chippenham. Although we aren't a big enough town to warrant a multiplex cinema, we have to be grateful for Leekes. That's something no other town nearby has.

I don't see it as whinging to get the best you can for your own local town centre.
One BIG thing you are missing yes you can drive else where. But that takes time and money. If you have a car fine. But hassle if you have to catch a bus. But by going to trowbridge etc the money is leaving the town.
If the money is spent in town granted it maybe going in to the pockets of big retailers. But they have staff that are local and they will spend there money in town. Hardly rocket science and keeps the money in the town.
And they are building houses that local people can't afford so they are not working locally. So they spend there money else where. And it does not stay in melksham.
Who said anything about big retailers I didn't. So not sure where you got that from. I would happy for local independents. Where I know the money will stay local. And it is not identikit of every other high street.
Superdrug must think it is worth while as they have one in Chippenham, Trowbridge and Devizes. And are now in the process of opening one in town.

Not a 100% sure on that it is great place to live. It is ok.
I agree we are not big enough to warrant a Multiplex but one in Trowbridge would be fine.
You again are assuming that people have cars by saying it is no hassle. It is if you have 3 kids and no car. And what if you don't drive and want to get trowbridge late at night. Sorry but I don't fancy hanging around the market place after dark let alone on a friday or saturday night late.
Umm grateful for leekes because no other town has one, what about Knees same thing but on a smaller. Well considering Melksham is the only Leekes in England it baffles me. Hardly sounds right to me Cross Hand, Llantrisant, Tonypandy and Melksham but if it works for them it does. And would not call where they are the Town centre. Again you need a car or to catch a bus out there. And nearly all of it is over priced anyway.
I am not sure what Melksham needs but it needs something. A nice injection of cash to start with. I mean Trowbridge and Devizes have a museum. Does melksham not have anything that is worth looking at. No not really it seems. It needs a focal point. Trowbridge, Chippenham and Devizes all have shopping areas that are car free. So why not Melksham with a covered shopping area that would be nice. It would encourage people no matter what the weather. Where you would put I am not sure.
I mean it has a market place but no Market. Devizes and Chippenham have markets.
I don't want to be seen as slagging Melksham off. Even though it seems like it. I choose to come and live here after all. But I have come in to the area after being away for 12 years. So think I come here with an open mind and can see where things are lacking. Because I see it more like an outsider would.

Re: Town Centre on its last legs ?
Calley - guess I'm spoilt by having a car and no longer any small kids in tow and don't appreciate the problems some may have.
Having lived in Melksham all my life and not knowing what it's like to live anywhere else I have nothing to compare it to - but despite that, I still wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
As long as I've lived here people have complained about the lack of shops etc and still nothing gets done. It's not like it's never all been said before.
When Leekes first arrived in Melksham everyone I know slated it saying that it was too big for the town and they wouldn't get the customers but people travel miles to go there. It seems that people always want to knock our town. We have a great indoor swimming pool, two very good gyms, a nice park and surrounding area, a sports centre, a great kids resource in Boomerang, some good restaurants and of course the hairdressers! Just a shame we lack the shops.

I have lived in two different towns. Bath and Bristol. I know you may well say hard to compare possibly.
But Bristol is not just one big town. It is really lots of mini-towns around the main hub of Bristol.
I was lucky where I lived as I was only about half a mile from the countryside. But we where lucky as we lots of little shops as well as few bigger shops. So it meant not going to far for most things.
To do banking etc we had to go a little further.
I agree that we lucky that we have a nice pool in the centre of town. In most other towns you need a car or have to walk miles to get to it.
And agreed that this has been going on for years saying what is needed and no action. And it will keep happening.
There needs to be something that everyone can pull together on. As I said before I would love for there to be a Market in town even if it was on a saturday morning. I would love to be able to go down and pick up local produced eggs, cheese and meat. It would be a focus and encourage people in to town once a week.
Maybe we need to give the town council a kick up the backside. As they are suppose to doing what is best for Melksham.
Reckon all of us on here need to get on the town council and maybe we could get something done
Yours
