Absolutely agree with everything you said LL,was all enthusiastic about it coming into town andthen havent bothered as its at the Avonside, will try to make an effort also, but if it was just in town and you were passing as you were doing the rest of your shopping,I think it would be beeter supported.
Goaty is completely right in what he says about greedy landlords, but its a shame,as Melksham needs all the shops it can get.
But,no more Hairdressers please!

Like you Calley - I always try to buy goods in Melksham. Were you not able to get slippers in Peahens?

The only thing that I do find is as Peahens is the only clothes shop in Melksham - we all are dressing the same!!! Do like majority of their stuff & is reasonable though.

I would have bought them in peahens but they did not have the style I wanted. As I want bootie style slippers. As I get really cold feet in the winter.

That makes me sound like a old granny I am only in my 30's LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

Yours

Calley

The Market Place improvements, if they ever happen, should be a positive for the town. Other proposals have been commissioned looking at how to make the place look better and these will go out to the public for comment soon.

Overall though, the sort of shops we have isn't in anyone's control. Melksham is stuck between Trowbridge, Devizes and Chippenham so is always going to struggle if it tries to compete. There are other ways to compete however. The Town Centre has Avon House, with lots of sports facilities, the Blue Pool, Aqua Leisure, the Adventure Centre and the canoe club. Maybe sport and leisure related businesses could develop here?

If anyone has ever been to Hay on Wye, it is only about 2000 people but has dozens of bookshops on the back of which there have developed restuarants and cafes, hotels and the Hay Literature Festival

Frome has lots of arty type businesses.

Glastonbury cashes in on the links to the Tor and has lots of new age type shops.

In many ways, it is chance and good luck how a town develops - it certainly was for Hay.

How do people think that Melksham might develop? What sort of 'theme' would be good?

Panchromatica,
Thats a good idea to have a theme for Melksham, and without realising it we probably already have the basis for:
          "EAT ON THE STREET"
It has that catchy twist to the tongue, just like party in the park.
All thats needed is a few plastic chairs on the pavements outside the takeaways, and some could even lay down a bit of decking for the "quality" look.
Im not sure if they would also have to put a Portaloo outside the shop though to meet restaurant criteria.

Top idea Panchromatica, if the sham was promoted as a leisure/water-sporty sort of place it could attract people from miles around. What ever happened about those plans for a lake on the land near Countrywide??

Have you seen the latest changes at the Old Stable Market? Looks like we'll have a couple of new businesses in there too.

As far as I'm aware the building has been sold (or lease taken, I'm not sure which). I haven't got a clue what will be going in there though, but I will endeavour to find out! Maybe an ice rink? That would be so cool. emoticon
