The local youths
Melksham is fast becoming a no go zone on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings due to the large groups of youths that congregate around the takeaways.
:ast Friday I went out to the Tavern and had to negotiate a group of 25 kids all shouting abuse. There were 4 police officers in range but none of them did anything.
Yesterday evening, I was walking along the other side of Bath Road, again to avoid a large group outside of the takeaway, and again, was subject to abuse.
People ask me why I bother going out in town, well I live in Melksham and have the right to gout out where I like without being subject to mindless harassment and abuse from the low life youths that seem to "rule" the town centre!

Re: The local youths
You've got more courage than me Mas, i used to go out on a Saturday night, but stopped going about 3 years ago now, safer to stay home. No surprise regarding the police either, they don't seem to bother at all that's IF there are any around.

Re: The local youths
The teenagers hanging around here are no worse than anywhere else, they just stand out more as the town is so small. This does not mean I think they are okay - I hate them and always challenge them when they are in small groups over swearing and rubbish. The police are pretty useless, but surely that's legislation that stops them being able to act? It's the children's parents that allow them to go out who are the real culprits to blame in this social problem.

Re: The local youths
I think the police have the right idea - the youths are not actually doing anything wrong, I don't believe there is a law about being "intimidating". If the police approached it could inflame a situation which is best left to disperse on its own. I believe it better they observe from a distance, making the group aware of their presence but not intervening unless necessary. I realise these groups can be very scary in numbers and intimidating but they also have every right to be on the streets too (no matter how much we don't like it). I wish to say that I don't condone their behaviour but am trying to be objective and see both sides. I do get annoyed at the amount of litter and damage caused but also can say that I've seen adults (who maybe should know better) littering, swearing, getting very drunk & fighting!!

Re: The local youths
I Quite agree, melksham im not saying is any worse than any other town, but the youths that hang out round the town and the local streets is frightening,i wouldn't go out into town any night let alone weekends, not even to my corner shop, most nights we have groups of boys and girls, all under 18,walking past with boxes of beer, drinking them all then thinking its great to smash them on the pavement and roads, they then can't handle there drink and start fighting,i would just like to know as the shops can't sell drink to under 18's,where are they getting the drink from in the first place?some of the scene's iv'e seen from my house have been really awful,

Re: The local youths
Are you guys seriously suggesting that it is only young people you see acting this way? Go into town on a sat night and you will see all age ranges shouting abuse at each other and breaking bottles on the floor. Don't be so quick to judge the young people either, they're not all bad!
just a quick question though, why is it frightening seeing these young people? Is it because they are hurling abuse or because you are tarring them all with the same brush? They know how people perceive them, and when they see you cross over the road to avoid them, they know you're doing it!
And saying you hate young people, not exactly nice is it? how do you think that they feel reading these comments, i know that it would annoy me if I was in their shoes. Think about your preconceptions of young people and work out a way to get past them, get to know them and you will probably see that they are not bad people at all!

Re: The local youths
I tend to agree with you with regards the boys, & yes sometimes the girls, but i try not to tar all with the same brush,if i see a couple of youngsters coming towards me ( i use a mobility scooter) i do get a bit apprehensive but will smile & say hello & 9 times out of 10 they look a bit shocked but smile a say hello back. So in my opinion not all bad.
