EGR, Black smoke when starting up
There are a number of possible causes, including diesel pump set up and worn injectors. Problems related to the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve -EGR- can cause black smoke on start up.
The EGR valve sits on top of the inlet manifold. It's shaped like a small, silver coloured 'flying saucer' (UFO). A small bore black rubber pipe is connected to it. The system can clog the valve jam open or closed, or fail to operate correctly.
Some members have cured the black smoke problem by disconnecting the black pipe and blocking the end with a ball bearing or screw. They haven't yet reported any negative effects from doing this. If the valve is jammed in the open positon, blocking the pipe won't be effective.
Other members have fitted a metal blanking plate, between the EGR valve and inlet manifold, effectively preventing gases from recirculating.
The EGR does serve a purpose and full function can often be restored by cleaning the system.
