Rattle, sump guard bolts

Sump guard bolts:

A new customer called in with a 2.8 Pajero which had a ‘rattle in the engine bay’. I traced it to the sump guard, where two of the bolts had sheared.

The guards are held in place by 6 bolts which can eventually work loose, or shear. You may notice a rattle or if you’re very unlucky, the guard could drop without warning. But this is a pretty unusual event - I’ve only heard of it happening to a handful of owners.

Put your Mitsubishi on the ramps or jack it up and use axle stands. Check all the sump guard bolts are tight, including those bolts that are shared between the front and rear guards. If any of yours are missing, it’s advisable to replace them. There are 4 x size 14mm bolts and 2 x 12mm.
