The causes of black, blue and white smoke
The smoke from the exhaust on a diesel engine can give a good pointer to what's causing a problem, some of which are listed below:
Black smoke is generally an air to fuel imbalance - either too much fuel or not enough air:
Dirty air filter
Faulty injectors or injector pump
Faulty turbocharger or intercooler
EGR problem
White smoke is generally unburnt fuel:
Faulty engine/pump timing
Faulty injectors/pump
Fuel starvation
Water in the fuel
Engine compression low
Blue smoke is generally an indication of burning oil:
Too much oil in the engine
Faulty valves or valve stem oil seals
Engine wear - Worn piston rings or cylinders
Faulty injector/lift pump - oil mixing with fuel
Faulty tubocharger
