Staffs and Starships - closing down

This brand new magazine is calling for submissions for the debut issue that's planned for this summer.

quote:

Here’s what we want:

   1. Fiction of literary quality that leans towards the traditional
          * No space opera, no cyber punk, no urban fantasy
          * No horror, supernatural, psychological thriller
   2. Fiction with strong characters and sound plots
   3. Fiction that raises a question – whether explicit or implicit

This first issue will host ten stories, so it will be substantial. Subsequent issues will house between five and six stories (depending on word counts). Please keep stories under 3000 words.

The best news is that they are open to email submissions, as you can see in the

Submission Guidelines

Right now, they are paying between 10 US$ and 30 US$ per story, depending on word count. Let's hope they are so successful that the rate can rise. emoticon

I hope that I can soon report that we have liftoff!

Re: Staffs and Starships - new spec fic market

Answer by Master Akura (who runs Staffs and Starships):

Staffs & Starships is looking for spec fiction that pulls from more traditional venues. Space opera, cyber punk, and urban fantasy are rather limited in their scope; the others just don't interest me.

Sword & Sorcery stories work well; quest stories are good; contemporary science fiction pieces inspired by science are good, too. There are a number of other routes one can take when writing speculative fiction that isn't one of those three types.

If you have more specific questions, please feel free to email me: editor@jbdrydenco.com

Sadly, this magazine is closing its doors for now.

Closing Shop

Still, it's better to close down before running into debt and disappointing many. I wish you lots of luck and a chance at a new beginning later.
