Competition: superheroine comic

Most contests in the comic book business are geared toward artists. Shadowline is bucking the tide and creating a contest geared toward writers!

According to Shadowline editor, Kristen Simon, “I’d been hoping to see a super-hero book with a strong female lead to act as a counter-point to our popular Bomb Queen series, but none were forthcoming. So I decided to come up with a contest to create a super-heroine for the 21st Century.”

The character will be 100% creator-owned as all Image and Shadowline books are (Trademark and copyright to be shared by writer and artist). The winning entry will be featured in their own self-titled three issue mini-series to be drawn by fan-favorite artist, Franchesco! (She-Dragon, Green Lantern Corps Quarterly) and back-end profits will be split between the creators.

Contest regulations are listed below. Neither Image nor Shadowline can or will be responsible for synchronicity (similar ideas appearing at the same time).

No feedback will be provided on submissions, just a confirmation of receipt.

Contest will be divided into three parts as outlined below, deviation will result in immediate disqualification:

Round One:
Contestants e-mail a BRIEF one paragraph story synopsis by January 31, 2008 to: superheroinecontest@gmail.com. Stories/concept must be original with original characters. No pre-existing characters may be used unless owned by contestant.

Round Two:
Ten semi-finalists will be chosen from all entries received by the above date and notified by e-mail. They will then be required to turn in 5 (five) fully scripted pages by February 29, 2008.

Round Three:
The five finalists will be announced and their synopses published on March 10. Readers will be encouraged to vote on their favorite. (Writers are strongly advised to direct traffic to the contest via message boards, myspace, etc…every vote counts!) Polls will close on April 4, 2008.

The winner will be announced April 28 with initial concept art/character design by Franchesco. First issue will be solicited with a cover date of November, 2008.

I had three different character ideas while I was reading the notice last night, worked out a story and setting for one of the ideas over dinner, and had three issues roughly plotted before bed.

So, yes, I might emoticon

The editor posted on a discussion board that she had 600 submissions in the first few days and was rejecting them as fast as they were coming in...

If anyone else on this forum is interested in writing for comics, there's not likely to be a better chance of getting your pitch actually read by an editor. It's only one paragraph in an e-mail so there's nothing to lose by trying emoticon

I'm actually really tempted.
There need to be more decent superheroines (I often have this discussion with my boyfirned when we've just left the comic shop).

I've had ideas in this direction before, but several of those are parodies or satirical. Still no harm in thinking about it.

I'm assuming that the main points about the character and her concept are summed up in the single paragraph along with a short plot idea. The concept and plot aren't separate, are they?

This does sound like a fun thing to try. I don't know how serious I could make a superhero/ine, I'm a rather silly person at times and all my ideas so far have been more toward the comical heroics and less in the serious end of the spectrum.....

I do have an idea for a story in which the MC is female and has the power of timetravel, but I'm not sure that would be good enough....

They say one paragraph, so I imagine that's one paragraph to explain both the character and the entire story arc (remember you need to describe the ending of the story, so don't end with "But will she survive???" -- you're not teasing a reader, you're letting the editor know you know how to finish the story).

And Loud G -- what's wrong with comical? They don;t specify the tone/genre you should be aiming for emoticon

Seriously, I've seen loads of discussion about this on comics forums thie week and the Shadowline editor has contributed the following advice: DON'T SECOND-GUESS THEIR REQUIREMENTS! If they had restrictions or specific needs, they would have said so. They deliberately left it open to see what fresh ideas people could come up with. If they had a specific idea in mind, they would have assigned it to one of their regular writers already emoticon

Two of the winners seemed interesting, but the other three were pretty run of the mill boring. I think the artist just couldn't paint London, David.
