I'm going to write a novel in 2 months

Or, at least, that's the plan.

I have had writers block and weeks worth of computer problems lately. My computer is fixed. My block isn't.

So, I've been doing nothing much, and then I wandered by David's Blog. He had a plan to write a story in seven days.

I thought bigger...

So, I intend to write a novel in 2 months. 1 week to plan (finishes on Monday, and I have all the chapters planned - now to go into more details).

5 weeks to write (only 2571 words a day) or 18000 words a week, or 90000 in 5 weeks.

1 week to edit, and 1 week extra incase I miss anything.

So, if you don't see me until November, you'll know why.

And if it doesn't work, well, it should cure my block.

Good luck! Let me know how you get on. I don't know if my seven-day plan will scale up to a novel but I offer a full blog subscription refund if it doesn't emoticon

Sounds like NaNoWriMo, to me. At least it's similar.

I'm going to write half a novel in November. emoticon

Ugh! Not the challenge for me. Writing a short-ish story in a week, that I could do. A novel (that I'd be willing to acknowledge later, at least) in 2 months... no. Then again, part of that is just that I don't have the spare time to spend on it.

But whether you make your deadline or not, if it gets you writing again, then it's a great thing! Good luck!

I've never even attempted a novel. I think it really needs a different approach (maybe even a completely different set of skills) to short story writing and I don't think the way that I write short stories "in my head" will really work for novels.

I heard this once, and it made perfect sense to me:
Writing a short story, you have to be very conscious of the words you use. Everything has to be a lot tighter.

Writing a novel is just putting one word in front of the other until you're done.

I know that's simplistic but it's pretty close.

Really?! Wow. I mean, I knew you were mostly a short story guy, but I guess I'd assumed that you had some half-finished novel floating around from some point!

You're right though: writing a novel and writing a short story don't require the same logic or thinking style. So I can definitely see how people can be better at one than the other. Myself, I tend to think in novel-form, mostly because I can't help but realize how connected everything and every person is -- and those connections get a bit much for a short story!

That's quite a goal, hope it all goes well.

I'd say it's a good thing to aim for but don't push yourself too hard or stress yourself out trying to do it, that'll just make the situation worse. From what you've said it sounds like you're sensible enough not to do that, but sometimes these things can sneak up on us.

Call in at least a little in the next couple of months to update us. Especially if you start getting negative feelings and need a little perspective, other people are good for that.

Good luck with it. emoticon

I've written two chapters, or about 4000 words, in three days. So it's a good start.

Actually, I've written more, because I've started a blog detailing my progress. So about 4500 words, maybe.

It's fun to be writing again.

Where is your blog, Blitzen? The link in your sig doesn't go anywhere (I think it has been broken for a while).

Done.

One week in, and I've wrote 10,000 words. Quite a bit behind, but still... 10,000 words is not to be sneered at.

Nice work, Blitzen! Don't worry about a hard word-count deadline. If you're writing 10,000 words a week, that's awfully good as is!

Re: I'm going to write a novel in 2 months

Well, the two months plan is off... but I'm still writing most days, so I achieved what I set out to do. Victory is mine.

The problem with the two monthy thingy is that I have tendonitis or something like it and for a week there I was nearly crippled, so slowly slowly is good.

I forgot typing would be so painful. I'd get a dvorak keyboard if this wasn't a shared computer.

Blitzen, make sure you don't bend your wrists - at best not at all. For me, that meant getting a keyboard tray. I suppose it might be difficult to get that worked out on a shared computer, but it's still good for your wrists.

I've been in carpal tunnel land, so...

Also, it may be useful to think about what else might be straining you. Are there areas in your life where you are constrained in movement? Sometimes, the body expresses these things in physical illness if the situation isn't changed.

I hope you'll get well fast and that typing will be pure fun again. emoticon

Also look at the height difference between your desk and chair. If the chair is a lot lower or the desk a lot higher it can force you to bend your wrists too much. Avoid a set up that has your wrists or forearms resting against the sharp edge of your desk, as this can reduce blood flow, irritate tendons, and impinge nerves.

If it's in your fingers or hands rather than wrists...this sounds silly but really helped me...try warming up your hands with some exercises before diving into massive amounts of typing. (But not right now while they are already irritated.) I have arthritis in my right hand, and mildly in my left. I've broken all the fingers in my right, some as many as three times. Sadly at least three of my hobbies (writing, painting, and music) require a lot of manual dexterity, so I feel for you.

Okay, Bane, now I'm curious[1]. How did you manage to break all your fingers THREE TIMES?

I think your achievement is pretty awesome, especially since they are (hopefully) quality chapters, not rushed-for-the-sake-of-wordcount chapters.
