PR - Beginners journey
I thought perhaps this would be a good topic since I seem to have been bitten by the desire to actually try and write
The desire was simple at first and I really didn't recognize it as such. Truth now, I just wanted to help a friend (Firle) in restarting her challenge series. I thought perhaps I could provide some amusement with my story attempt and maybe encourage some others to contribute as well.
The story was simple and I thought I was done with it but now a strange thing has occurred, I find snippets flowing from the little story that seem to be related to a greater story! I do not have a huge detailed outline and have no idea how long this new urge will last but I find myself motivated to try and put the whole story down even though I do not yet know what form it will take.
One thing that is puzzling me is the way the story is coming to me, it is not coming as a complete or connected story like you see in a book yet, I am getting small snippets from the lives of the characters (I have names for 5 of them so far) but no specific order for their story lives yet... Does that make sense? Will the snippets start coming together as I write? I really have no idea at this point but as long as the little snippets keep coming I'll keep writing them down.
I did get a broad outline concept yesterday which I find fascinating. I have it divided like this at present just so I can know in a rough way what is happening when in the little snippets my imagination is giving me.
1. 14th century - The quest and journey.
2. 21st century - Mans discovery and journey.
3. 28th century - Rediscovery and reconciliation.

Wow Rick, it's great that you are feeling this way. This is the exciting bit, when all the ideas are coming to you.
I hope the ideas keep coming to you.

Re: PR - Beginners journey
I was really wondering about the way things are coming to me and hope my newly found urge to write doesn't go away because I skipped a day. There were lightning storms at my neck-o-the-woods yesterday with 1inch hail and 3 reported tornadoes so I stayed off the computer till very late and got no writing done.
Now I know why we still have notebooks with real paper I'll have to pick one up for this new urge of mine.

Re: PR - Beginners journey
I hope this little thread works as an encouragement to others like myself who have never written before but always wanted to give it a try. I may or may not advance to the point of actually being published but the fun of trying along with the huge puzzle of where the little bits of story go in relation to whole scheme of things is something I am finding most enjoyable.

Re: PR - Beginners journey
A friend of mine said if I was going to be writing Science Fantasy with faeries and space ships and such I needed some good mood music so he created a online radio station for me here. I kinda like it but wonder, do you find background music distracting when you are trying to write or does it help get things going?

Awww, what a lovely thing to do.
I mostly write without music, but I think I'm in a minority. I'll let the others speak for themselves.

Yah! Keep writing!
If there are things going on around me, or it feels too quiet then I put music on, but I can and do write without it sometimes.

Re: PR - Beginners journey
Congrats, Rick! That's awesome that you're so motivated!
And it's not uncommon at all to have pieces of characters pop into your head. It just means that you're one of those people who finds characterization a crucial part of any story. I've had it happen before to me, too. (Which only tells you that you're no more crazy than me! Maybe that's not a good sign....)
As for music, I can't deal with it when I'm writing, though I understand others really find it helpful. I just get distracted by it, though. I think it's a matter of having spent too many years learning and playing music -- I listen TOO much.

Pretty much the same for me. As a musician I'm unable to listen to music passively, some part of me is always analyzing what is going on in the music.

Re: PR - Beginners journey
I am very upset with yesterdays storms, they caused so many roads to be closed that it was almost midnight before I made it home which meant no writing yesterday
Today should be a good one though, I am getting ideas for all three parts floating in my head this morning

Re: PR - Beginners journey
I have to say that a science fantasy concept might be interesting as well. I don't believe it is done all to much at that..., well I guess you'll know soon enough what it might become.

Re: PR - Beginners journey
Well I just rediscovered a rule on writing and computers... Save your work often! I had just over 5 pages done in the first part of my story but then the power went out so I am back at square one because I didn't save the work.

That's terrible... I only hope you can bring it up to write it all again. And this time it'll be even better I bet.

Re: PR - Beginners journey
auto save? I'll have to look for that because it sounds like a real life saver.
The story is still fresh so I can try and rewrite it but it won't be exactly the same and now I am second guessing what I wrote before when doing the rewrite and that is confusing things and making it harder (not good when you are totally new to writing).

Oh no! That's awful, Rick. I know exactly what you mean about second-guessing yourself.
Good luck retyping. You can do it!!

Auto save is amazing!
Good luck with the rewriting, it's terrible when your brain gets in the way.

Re: PR - Beginners journey
Rick, in OO you'll find the autosave under Extras / Options (I hope, I'm translating this from the German version, plus I still have the old 2.x version).
Click next to "Load/Save", choose "General". You'll find a line that says something like:
"Save autorestore information every xxx minutes"
where you can choose the number of minutes. I have mine set to 15 min.
Hope you'll find this all right.

Found it, in OO3.1 it is in Tools/Options but everything else is the same. I feel better now

Great, hopefully that will prevent future such disasters for good. And I hope you have managed to write out the section again that you lost.

Re: PR - Beginners journey
I was almost done with the re-write when two things happened that changed the story direction. I saved the re-write but have been doing some research on the character backgrounds in the 14th century side (discovered it should really be the 12th century in the process).
Now, how do you get jumbled story ideas sorted out? I have three openings and they don't work together but I like all three of them

Re: PR - Beginners journey
Well, in such cases, I ask my subconscious to come up with a solution. Quite often it works in surprising ways.
And then I save the other ideas for another story.

Re: PR - Beginners journey
I have been in the "work from home" mode for the last 5 days thanks to my van being in the shop... You would think this would be a big help on writing but I have been so worried about the lost income I fell into RB promotions and a skin design as "comfort work." I am still working at it but the new hobby is taking a back seat to my old hobbies. I think I will have to put a memo on my pad reminding me to write for at least an hour a day...

Re: PR - Beginners journey
Well the memo idea was tried and it didn't work *sigh*... I have been going at it but it is like third or fourth in my hobby list which means it gets the "end of the day" time slot. My output is anywhere from 100 to 1200 words per day while dealing with Virginia (The Lady of the Lake). She won't let me get on with the rest of the story!
