Re: I Wrote Today!

I wrote another chapter on my online grammar review. I haven't done that in about 2 years, from the date on the last one. I started writing the thing because I was reading a lot on Fictionpress and some of the writers there were just so BAD at grammar that I couldn't take it. (Oddly enough, it's been my most-read "story" ever since.) This year's chapter: the homophones lose/loose, effect/affect, and.... one other that I can't come up with right now.

I'm not thrilled with it yet, though the basis is fine. It's just that I usually try to make the chapters light-hearted and vaguely amusing. I mean, who's going to want to read a "story" about grammar if it's too serious?! Talk about boring! But I had a lot of trouble working the humor into this chapter, so I'll have to go back and fix that on the edit, I think. Still, it was nice to add more to that piece. I was just in the mood, I guess.

Re: I Wrote Today!

I reordered my dissertation (AGAIN) and fixed the intro section yesterday. That really needed to get done, since it was sort of a mess of disconnected pieces rather than a coherent whole.

It's strange. I can write fiction, poetry, or essay-like prose very quickly. But when forced to write technical papers, I have a lot of trouble. I think it's because the expected style forces me to write in ways I don't like -- a lot of passive voice, limited (non-technical) vocabulary, dense sentence structure, etc. I'd really like to get away from this style, to write in my OWN voice, but it's not considered acceptable (ie: my prof would just tell me to rewrite it all). I find this highly unfortunate!

Ugh.

Yeah, writing for journals requires a very different style. I tried to write a piece about my favorite healing technique for a small magazine, and deleted what I had written after three paragraphs. emoticon

Good luck for your dissertation!

Lately I've been hopping between projects like some kind of crazed rabbit and getting next to nothing done, but today I wrote on The Tribe and it went good. I think it's finally heading where I want it to again. Sigh. Don't you hate it when a story comes unraveled right in the middle of writing it? emoticon

Sometimes it happens to me, but that generally means the story will become even more interesting. Good luck on finding a gripping solution!

Re: I Wrote Today!

I wrote today. And planned yesterday.

I don't know how much I wrote today because I wrote it in pen, but I wrote it. It's a scene for a story I'm planning right now. I wrote the scene because I plan best when I'm writing. Things just pop out.

I suppose I should do a snowflake or something like that, but I'm feeling like writing, so I'll do that until I either write myself into a box or need a bigger picture.

I'll post what I've got in the appropriate section where you all can take it apart, if that moves you.

I've been reading about being blocked and how writing about a story you don't "care" about. So I started writing a simple scene. Next thing I know I've wrote 1400 words! emoticon emoticon To bad it wasn't on one of the stories I want to finish. emoticon
