Re: I Wrote Today!

I actually wrote today (alas, not the dissertation). Considering that I haven't written anything but a quick flash piece since I finished my last story a while back, that's saying something. And it was GOOD writing, too.

I went back to one of my other stories (I have a half-dozen going at any time) and added two chapters. One is more-or-less done, including editing (though the final-final edit will happen tonight) and the other is a full first draft.

It was kind of strange, since I'm not really sure what prompted me to choose THIS story rather than one of the others. I've got a little kids' piece that's maybe 70% done, which I'd been planning to finish up next, but instead I was motivated to do this one. It's an adult novel about two sisters with abusive parents -- not exactly happy material, and I was only 5 chapters in, anyhow. I was in a good mood and all, so I'm not sure what pointed me towards a somewhat morbid subject, but the results were good, so I guess I can't complain!

At that rate you'd be done in uhmmm... When predicting mean time to finishing, should I also add in all your inactive periods, or do you think using a median would work better? Or to even go crazy with perhaps a Bayesian? emoticon

Hehehe! I think you'd definitely have to do SOMETHING about my inactive periods. I tend to work in spurts, I'm afraid. This is what happens when you have a day job! emoticon

I set up a directory to keep my stories in on OO today. I suspect most will be really bad at first but how will I know if what I write has promise or not? Do I delete the old stories or keep them? I plan on expanding the little challenge story to 500 words tonight (but you can not see it till after the poll results are "official").

1. Share them with the board for critiques.

2. Never throw a story away. You may be able to mine them for ideas later. You may one day realize exactly what is wrong with that story and fix it. etc...

I agree. Don't toss your old stories. Save them in a directory labeled "OLD_STUFF" or something. If you never look at them again, that's okay. But this way, if you ever want them, you'll be able to find them.

I didn't make it emoticon I managed 158 words before I came to a spot where I didn't know how to proceed then OO told me it had a update and I just finished installing the all new OO3.1 and the Lightspeed grammar checking extension. I am hoping tomorrow is better.

Well, don't feel bad, Rick. You got 158 words more than you did before. Sometimes, writing takes baby steps.

True true and the update probably was rather a distraction. But major updates like that don't happen all that oftenly. Just go for it again and try to do better on the next round. emoticon

This is way harder than it sounds emoticon I have the grand idea/concept in my mind well enough that I could tell the story sitting around a campfire but it isn't coming out in the writing side yet.

Yes! Just about a quarter done my mini-nano story! It's been slow, adding a scene here and there, but I've managed to keep it alive in my head and move forward. So I'm happy. emoticon

Keep writing, Pastor Rick, each word is another brick in the road of your story. emoticon
When I last attempted a novel it felt very forced and wooden by the end, I'm trying to avoid that this time by just writing a scene at a time and writing other stuff now and then. So far its working. emoticon
Thanks for the well wishes, Firle and QS2!

Re: I Wrote Today!

Over the course of the last two days I've managed to get 859 words written in a short story - in fact, it's something I hope to be able to submit for this month's flash challenge, so you'll forgive me if I don't get too descriptive with it just now.

It's funny how something as simple and/or as technologically backward as simply writing your manuscript on a manual typewriter can actually stimulate your creative juices. Yet that's pretty much what's happened to me. It's quite a feeling of empowerment, and I heartily recommend something like this to anyone having issues with a block; when in doubt, change the medium you use to write in. Write in MS Word? Use OpenOffice.org Writer instead. Or WordPerfect (yes, it's still alive and actively developed). Or do what I did and regress to an older technology... dedicated word processors, typewriters, even writing it out longhand. The results might just surprise you.

Re: I Wrote Today!

Ooh! I just realized I haven't bragged here yet. emoticon

I finished the first draft of my $*&#ing dissertation last Monday. Now it's just got to be read by my professor and my boss, who will doubtless change 59237 things about it and re-arrange the whole thing. And then I have to present on it and convince 3 other professors that, really, it's good enough to let me graduate.

But despite all that's yet to come, it's a HUGE relief to have the first draft DONE. Plus, when my future-boss asked, "Did you give Tapley your dissertation?" I could honestly answer, "Yep, he's got it." (Okay, he'd only had it for 1.5 days at that point and hadn't even had a chance to glance at it, but that's a technical detail!)
