Looking for...

Hey guys,

I thought I might get lucky, so...

I need to find a novel that I can "model" for my novel tutorial class next year.

So, does anyone know of a magic realism novel that reminds you of or is like: (my novelemoticon A woman returns to her childhood home in Ireland for the death of her aunt, when she is swept up by the world of the faery she knew and loved as a child.

It doesn't have to be about the fae, but something that explores similar lines? Sadly my prof. is a prick when it comes to genre, and won't let us do anything "fantasy" genre-d, so it has to be literary fic in some way. (You have no idea how much I argue with him over this...and his definitions of "literary" and genre...)

Hey, he won't deny that "Midsummernight's Dream" is literature, would he? emoticon

Sorry, can't think of any novel like that right now.

Haha, sadly that'd be "too classical" or something.

I really wanted to use something by Charles de Lint. But, even though he hadn't heard of Charles de Lint, he decided that that was too much of a fantasy. *sighs*

I'll find something, sometime. But ya, if anyone thinks of anything, let me know, please!

Juliet Marillier's books are based heavily in Ireland and deal with, if not the fae, fantasy to some extent, but hopefully not enough to annoy your professor. Maybe you should try her?

Haha, thanks Reythia. It'll be a...very...*interesting* term, I think. Just so everyone knows, I gave up the search and went with something he thought would work: Calvino's "The Baron in the Trees" even though it is pretty much nothing like what I want to do. Oh well.

He decided he had to pick a book for us to read, too. Oh joy. Ugh. There goes all the chance for reading anything I wanted to read this summer. (I'm a slow reader when it comes to novels and such; I just like to drink things in, you know?) Anyway, his pick was Justin Cronin's "The Summer Guest."

...I'm much too picky of a reader for this kinda thing. emoticon
