Surprisingly Good Movies
Hey, folks!
I was just wondering if anyone could suggest a good, non-obvious movie. I mean one that isn't billed as being "the movie of the summer" or anything. I never know what to rent at the store...
Anyhow, my suggestion is "The Illusionist". I'd never heard of it, and my friend actually rented it thinking it was a different movie, but it was very good. Most enjoyable. So if you've never seen it and are bored some day, give it a try.
Laters,
Reythia

Re: Surprisingly Good Movies
So pretty much any awesome movie that isn't a blockbuster...
Pan's Labyrinth is brilliant. Fauns and the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, what more could you want?
Plan 9 from Outer Space was surprisingly good considering nearly everywhere considers it the worst movie of all time. It is the kind of movie you can have a laugh at (not with) with mates.
One Hour Photo is a brilliant thriller starring Robin Williams.
Being John Malkovich for a really odd movie.
Hot Fuzz is probably the funniest movie I have ever seen.

Re: Surprisingly Good Movies
I definitely agree with "Pan's Labyrinth," it's an excellent movie.
Well, as for newer movies that I've seen, the latest was "Live Free or Die Hard" which I really loved, but then again, I love good action.
Some of my favorite movies to watch...Agatha Christie's "Poirot" mysteries, really, all of them are excellent. (Though I only like David Suchet as Poirot.) Oh, I also saw "The Fountain" and thought it was beautiful. The cinematography was just gorgeous.
If you're in for something silly and like Monty Python style, a must see is "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead." (And no, it's not by Monty Python.)
Well, I'll leave it there for now...

Re: Surprisingly Good Movies
I just saw "Pan's Labrynth" and really liked it as well.
"Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" is only of my very favorite plays, Thor, but I didn't like the movie as much as the written play, actually. Of course, most books are better than their movies, so that's no big shocker!

Re: Surprisingly Good Movies
I know this thread is old, but...
If you've ever come across one of those 50-movie sets, the ones that usually sell for around $20 at Best Buys or Wal*Marts or whatever, go ahead and pick them up. It's all expired-copyright B-movie stuff to be sure, but there are usually some real diamonds in the rough in these "shovelware" boxes - though granted, there's also a lot of garbage to sift through to get to them.
I'd also recommend paying a visit to a site like PublicDomainTorrents.com, where many (not all) of these same movies can be downloaded, legally, at no cost. If nothing else, you can't beat the price...
