Goodkind to become Syndicated TV serial

That's right, apparently "the Sword of Truth" series is going to be made into hour long TV episodes for fall 2008.

Article on the Television Series

Now, I've not read his stuff, but I have heard a lot of people on both sides with very strong opinions about the merits of his work.

What do you think?

Re: Goodkind to become Syndicated TV serial

The first book is one of the best starts to a fantasy series I've ever read. One of the books in the middle is also excellent. Most of the others are good, but not extraordinary. Oh -- I should add that I stopped reading after whatever book it was that involved the girl and her goat, or maybe the one after that (I've lost track of which order they were in). So I can't judge the last few books.

My main problem with the series is that after the first book or two, Goodkind caught a bad case of Robert-Jordan Disease. As in, he didn't know when to start wrapping things up, so the story just KEPT GOING and getting more and more convoluted. That frustrates the crud out of me, which is why I stopped reading.

Also, it makes me wonder how they're going to get the whole SERIES into hour-long episodes. I would guess they plan on doing all of Book 1 for the first season, and then see where it goes? We shall see.

Thanks for the head's up!

That is being unfair to Robert Jordan, at least he stayed the course and kept the same main enemy, he just added lots more convolutions leading up to the final battle. In some of Goodkinds books though, well....

I... won't be watching. My opinion on Goodkind and his work is very negative. But I don't want to rain one everybody else's parade, and we need more fantasy stories in the media, so hooray!

Re: Goodkind to become Syndicated TV serial

Wizard's First Rule was an amazing book. I think that it did what Terry Goodkind intended his entire series to do. It changed the way I looked at things in the world. Just a little bit, but it did. I think that good books can do that, and it's nice to be surprised by a good book. Stone of Tears was just as good (if not as surprising). Blood of the Fold was disappointing but I suppose that was just the law of diminishing returns. It wasn't as good as the first two and the expectations for it were pretty high. By book four, I was getting a little tired of things. But I made my way through it, and there was enough there that I could enjoy it quite thoroughly. Book 5 was better than book 4 and I thought we were on our way back to where we had gotten to in the first place. Book 6 (Faith of the Fallen) was as good as the first two and I waited eagerly for Pillars of Creation. It was a good book. not as good as Faith of the Fallen but still pretty good.

Naked Empire shattered my dreams for an amazing fantasy series. It was an attempt to drag out a series, probably to make more money, to spew more philosophical garbage under the pretense of a story. Nothing important to the plot, the characters or anything happened. The end was the biggest case of irresponsible and unforgiveable Deus Ex Machina I have ever read (for both the main character Richard and his grandfather Zedd). The way Richard defeated the enemy was poorly constructed, I thought, and relied on a far-fetched relationship between a girl and her goat (there you go, Rey). Chainfire was appreciably better than Naked Empire, while still falling well short of the best books of the series. It was obvious that Goodkind was going back to what he had written well but I was so angry over the previous book that this one was a little ruined for me. Phantom got better again, but little things in his writing started nagging at me. Things about his characters, things about his writing - "she was beautiful. She was so beautiful she would make your breath catch in your throat to look at her. Yeah, she was hot. But she was evil too. So she was hot and evil and that made her ugly. So it didn't matter how hot she was because the evil in her just made her ugly. .... except she was hot." That's not a direct quote but I think I scoured the exact words out of my head because they were so inane. Confessor was just where the story stopped. Again, there was deus ex machina but what else do you do when you're outnumbered a million to one and you want to have the good guys win?

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Terry Goodkind's, though I used to be.

Hadaad, that's pretty much my opinion as well.

Was "Faith of the Fallen" the one with the statue? Because that was the later one that I liked. And yes, I realize it's "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand under another name, but I hated Rand's characters and I liked Goodkind's, and that made all the difference in the world.

I haven't read Atlas Shrugged but yes, that's the one with the statue. I liked it very much. Looking back, I realize that I probably wouldn't like it as much if I read it again today but I sure did like it when I read it.

I went back and re-read the series only a year or so ago and was pleasantly surprised that my opinions of the books hadn't changed, actually. I mean, the two books I liked best no longer seemed quite as great -- but that often happens upon the second read. Still, I found them worth the read. Can't say the same for the rest of the series, alas. emoticon

And I will watch the Sword of Truth series. At least for the first couple of seasons.

hadaad; you forgot to mention how the end of the series was a giant Deus Ex Machina. The worst of the series (and the worst I've ever come across, in my opinion).

Yeah, that's a good point, pinky. But I had already come to the conclusion that the end was going to be terrible no matter what happened, so it wasn't worth going into it that much.

So much good in that series and so much bad.
