I'm not Posting
I'm Procrastinating. Don't encourage me - I have a 1000 word essay to do on the role of the Gods in the Odyssey in 24 hours.

Re: I'm not Posting
Get back to work you lazy slacker!!
I would offer some advice as I've done similar essays before, but I don't know what angle you're taking and at this short notice I'm sure it would be no help.

Re: I'm not Posting
Phew, finished. Totally drained.
Thanks, Dragonlady - I argued that the gods detract from the effect of the poem because it is essentially a story about human ingenuity, but everytime a human does something ingenious there is a god behind them, inspiring them. The only time people don't have the gods behind them, they end up doing something nasty (like the suitors).
I don't think I'll get a high mark but I don't care as long as I pass.

Re: I'm not Posting
Congrats on finishing.
That sounds like an interesting premise, I hadn't thought of it that way before. You're right though, for all that Odysseus is lauded for his ingenuity and cunning he has gods helping him most of the time. But then Odysseus is generally a big cheater.
For all that I prefer the Odyssey to the Iliad I'm not a big fan of the central character.

Re: I'm not Posting
Achilles? We aren't really focusing on the Iliad. We just have a few readings to give us a feel of it. It seems very dry.

Re: I'm not Posting
Achilles isn't a major character in the Iliad. He's in it for a few pages, has a strop, and retreats to his tent, where everyone ignores him for the next three-quarters of the book.
None of the characters in the Iliad are very well presented, which is probbaly why it feels so dry. If you compare it with the Odyssey, which has many well-rounded characters, it feels much more primitive. Almost as if it wasn't the same writer...
If you have to read one or the other, the Odyssey is the better story. Or, even better, jump forward 500 years and read the Aenid instead.

Re: I'm not Posting
I meant that I'm not a big fan of Odysseus, even though I like the Odyssey better. He seems to break his own social codes and is a bit of a bastard.
I've never read the whole Iliad, probably should have done but managed not to, it is pretty dry.
