Mamma Mia!

Honestly, I've never thought I'm gonna meet a musical which can overtake the top spot of my favourite musical list from Hello Dolly (which, as a matter of fact, stood there pretty stable since the eighties), but this one did it. I've also never thought I could go all fanboy about ABBA songs, and seeing Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan sing is just pure joy to the heart.

More than that, this movie is giving me back drop by drop my joy of life (although, the impending coming of summer might have a hand there, too). Neverthless, I watch it with an ear-to-ear grin and I'm longing for a vacation in Greece a la Shirley Valentine.

I think the last movie which was simply good because it did have that, simple joy of life, was Much Ado About Nothing in 1992. By Kenneth Branagh, filmed in Toscana (another place which definitely would worth a visit), and yes, even Keanu Reeves could pull off a convincing act of well, acting.

So I guess, thanks for this movie, I am something I wasn't since quite a while: happy.

Just my two cents.

I'm glad it worked for you but I'll be giving it a miss emoticon

Seriously, I actually love Abba's music. But I saw a "making of" type programme on TV the other week and it featured snippets of the cast... er... well, I'll say "singing", but you know that's being awfully generous to them.

It's a great cast, fantastic actors, and I'll give them credit for having the guts to do the singing themselves. But... honestly...

Why would I put myself through the torture of some of my favourite songs being murdered like that? emoticon

Top spot on my favourite musical list is probably West Side Story, and in the movie version the divine Natalie Wood was dubbed by somebody who could really sing, giving you best of both (audio and visual) worlds emoticon

Re: Mamma Mia!

I didn't see the movie, but I saw the musical when it came to Milwaukee. I admit that I went in with some skepticism. I mean, ABBA music being made into a coherent musical?? Without ruining the music?

But I was pleasantly surprised. While I wouldn't go as far as Jessie about ranking it #1, it was definitely a good musical, worth watching AND listening to. My aunt bought the CD, and I've got a burned copy (perfectly legal, I'm sure) in my car now. It's not exactly like the original ABBA songs, Meadows, but it does them good credit. The feel is very much the same. And with one or two exceptions, the producers actually managed to put them together in a way that tells a story without feeling... awkward, like the story is just an excuse for the music to be sung.

Anyhow, Jessie, I liked the musical too, and Meadows, you should really go rent it. Then again... if "West Side Story" is your favorite musical, maybe our tastes won't align perfectly!
