Lirael by Garth Nix
I got this book as a birthday present from my collegues, and I'm almost through now.
First of all, I want to point out that Lirael is the second book in a trilogy. It helps to have read Sabriel but that's not necessary to enjoy this story.
The main characters are Lirael, a girl who does not develop the features her folk usually have, and Sameth, the Prince of the Old Kingdom. That prince is good at cricket and tennis, but not so good at being smart and using magic - which he needs much more now.
The story sees these two young people work their way through trying times without realizing that they are involved in a huge plot meant to destroy the Old Kingdom.
I'm going to spoil you with one more detail: I love the Disreputable Dog. It's a great creature, one that brings a lot of fun to a story that might have been too sad otherwise.
A good read. (I need a thumbs-up smilie...)

I just finished it.
Lirael is a good tale. And yet... it's the second book in a trilogy. Many of you know what that means.
in other words: Don't expect an ending. The book ends on a break, basically, while the main adventure and most plot lines wait for the final installment. That is somewhat disappointing.
Despite this flaw, Lirael is entertaining and well written. It's a book to enjoy - and best if you have the sequel at hand, which I do not.

The sequel is called Abhorsen I believe, if that helps in finding it.

Firle, I've been a great Garth Nix fan for many years, which you may guessed from my name.
Sabriel is quite different to Lirael and its sequel Abhorsen. I strongly suspect that Nix wrote Sabriel as a standalone and following its success wrote Lirael and then Abhorsen. The books focus on different characters and en enitrely different storyline, so in that way the books are less of a trilogy and more of a standalone and duo both set in the same world.
Garth Nix has recently released an anthology of short stories called 'Across The Wall.' The title story is more of a novella and runs for about 100 pages. Seeing you haven't read Abhorsen I won't mention whose in this short, but it's set entirely in Ancelstierre and worth looking at if you enjoyed the other books.

I know about Sabriel, because I own that book, too. Thanks for pointing out those Wall stories, I might add that to my wish list.

Hmmm, been awhile since I've really read anything fantasy related, closest recently would be a chapter from Zero no Tsukaima. But it does have a kind of similar magical world and Technological world combination again, though in this case I do think magic and technology works in both worlds.
PS, it's a Japanese work and I do not believe any publisher has officially taken it up on them to translate it.
