Paper in Space

Sounds ludicrous? It's not. The Japanese are going to launch paper planes from the ISS:

Japan scientists make paper planes for space

I find the idea rather moving. emoticon

Re: Paper in Space

Yeah, I heard about this. Actually, one of the researchers here (at my work) is giving a public outreach talk to a bunch of fifth graders (age ~10 for those not used to the US school system). He decided to tell them about this plane, figuring ten-year-olds would find it interesting. So he searched around online and dug out origami lifting body directions. Apparently having a PhD in geophysics does NOT mean you can follow simple pictoral directions to fold paper! emoticon So last week he came to my office and begged me to teach him how to make the thing. It was pretty amusing. Oddly enough, I think the fifth graders will have better luck at it than the 40+-year-old PhD did!

Wow, Reythia, that's very cool. I had no idea you were that close to the story.

Did he learn to fold the paper planes? emoticon

Haha! Well, I wouldn't call myself "close" to the actual story -- just aware of it.

I haven't actually taught my co-worker yet, since it's been a crazy week for both of us. I told him I'd show him at lunch next week. emoticon Let you know how it goes!

Hope that goes well then, it certainly is a very interesting concept, I wonder if they'll recover it. emoticon

You know, I can't help but think of the paperwings in Garth Nix' Two Kingdom world.
