A New Way to Deflect Asteroids
While looking for good news, I found this article, which is also good news:
How To Deflect Asteroids And Save Earth
I wonder when this will make a science ficiton story. Something like "Asteroid on a String", maybe.

Re: A New Way to Deflect Asteroids
Wow... I hadn't thought of something like that before... I wonder how it stacks up compared to the other proposed methods.

Re: A New Way to Deflect Asteroids
Yeah, I've heard of this theory. It could definitely work, in theory. The trick, of course, would be getting it attached firmly enough to be of use. A lot of asteroids are really nothing more than piles of loosely-packed gravels, which means getting a hold of them (to attach a tether, in this case) is really hard. Especially since it'd have to be done by robot, automatically.
Also, you'd have to do this far enough in advance to give the rock time to move out of the way. But that's true about pretty much all asteroid course alteration techniques.
