Space Solar Power
I'm fairly sure we've talked about it before, but seemingly while discussing another topic. However with these new far more concrete plans, it seems like space solar power might not be as far off as we thought.
To summarize the basic idea, to save on launch weight, the basic framework has been made inflatable, it no longer is necessary to link the modules due to changes in transmission technology and by using ion engines that run off the just launched solar panels, they say they can further reduce launch weight by some two thirds. Which gets them to a claim of 2.5 GW for about 3-4 billion in construction and launch costs, which they say is comparable to hydro and nuclear power plants. So what does everyone think, did they get their figures right? Is it really possible to achieve this at such affordable prices?
