My Hand
Last May I was told I had tendonitis, it would be fine went I finished college in June. In October my hand/arm got so sore I was sent home from work. I couldn't move my arm. I was off sick for five weeks doing physio. At 25 I have the wrist of a 70 year old. The physio had never seen such deterioation. I went back to work but as I work in a warehouse and couldn't lift I wandered about with a brush doing nothing until January. Now I do sort of half shifts. I just got a letter for a hospital consultation.
I've been told to expect an MRI scan (since no one knows whats wrong). Also probably an operation. It could be a simple bit of broken sticking up cartilage but the physio seemed to think I may have badly broken the cartilage that holds my wrist bones together.
Hence constant pain and an inability to straighten my fingers if I've used them too much. Or a little bit, even.
So computer time is now rationed (I can use my left but I'm so inexperienced it takes 3 times as long) so I tend to concentrate more on writing now and less on posting here.

Re: My Hand
That's awful. I've had tendonitis, and to my big surprise typing actually helped. I've since read a study that computer work is no longer implicated in causing tendonitis.
However, the correct position for typing is very important. Make sure you do not bend your hand upwards when typing. Also do not use the "feet" on your keyboard, make it lie as flat as possible. I actually use a keyboard tray that puts it below the desk level, so I can type without bending my wrists. Now I can type for hours on end, while 8 years ago my wrists were so bad that the right one was operated on. The left went into remission after that, and the pain never came back.
Tendonitis often is not just a simple physical problem of the wrist, but also stress related (and no, not repetitive strain related). Think about what kind of things you can't handle, what's slipping through your fingers or what you can't get a grip on. These things might be related to your problem.
I do wish you all the best, I know how frustrating it is when the pain doesn't end. *hugs*

Re: My Hand
I don't think that is just tendonitis anymore Firlefanz. Anyway, I do hope they can get it in order again.

Re: My Hand
Oh dear! Blitzen I hope all goes well. Of all the things to lose control of, my hands are among the most important as an artist and a writer. I would rather lose the use of the legs than my hands. I hope that everything goes well for you and that you are soon without pain!

Re: My Hand
Honestly, Loud, I know what you mean. The pain isn't the problem - it's the not being able to write. But hopefully it will be sorted out in the next few months.

Re: My Hand
Oh my! I hope the doctors figure out what's wrong, Blitzen. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! (But not while typing, because that's really hard to do!)
Hope it feels better soon!

Re: My Hand
Can I just add, off-topic, that this thread very neatly answered the question asked in the other thread?
"What do you use to write?"
"My hand."
Which just makes me think of Stephen King. I do not write with my hand. I write with my mind. One who writes with his hand has forgotten the face of his father."
Sorry. I get caught up in my own ridiculum sometimes.

Re: My Hand
Got the results of my MRI today. It's just deterioration. It will never get better. It will get worse.
If I give up my job it will get worse slowly.
If I don't, it will get worse quickly.
I asked about writing, and he said that wasn't the problem. So thank goodness for small mercies.

Re: My Hand
Sorry to hear that, Blitzen.
At least writing is not a problem. Small mercy, hope you can find a job that'll be less hard on your hands.

Re: My Hand
That's very bothersome and like Firle I hope you'll find something a bit less hard on your hands. There isn't going to a way to fix a hand problem any time soon in any case, despite considerable progress in such fields lately.

Re: My Hand
Oh no! I'm so sorry, Blitzen. Good luck hunting for a more wrist-friendly job. Do the doctors have any idea what caused the deterioration in someone so young? Or is it just general bad luck?
