Brainstorm: What images do you get ...
... when you think of Spec Fiction?
Is there anything popping into your mind? Objects, buildings, views, or vehicles?

I thought we were going smiley free for awhile... or is that over?
When I think of Speculative Fiction, I think of the Dark Tower by Stephen King. Mainly because it combines some sci-fi, some western, some fantasy...

Re: Brainstorm: What images do you get ...
I was only going smiley-free for a week... but now that you mention it, I think I'll do it again...
I'm afraid the term Spec Fiction brings nothing instantly to my mind. It's not a term I grew up with or use myself. I have no immediate, emotional reaction to it.
When I think more about it, then for some reason I get images of pretentious Anne-Rice-style vampires. Don't ask me why...

Re: Brainstorm: What images do you get ...
I agree with David, it conjures up nothing in the way of images. I have to force exterior images upon the label of speculative fiction.
When I do that though, I invariably get something like steam punk or X-files which come to mind.
So, odd technology mixed with everyday life with a splash of mysticism.

I'm getting steam punk too, especially airships. The court of the air springs to mind, and pirates of the relentless desert.

Re: Brainstorm: What images do you get ...
David - I thought it was smilie free for three weeks? That's what I did anyway. Well I used one smilie on MSN to my fiance, but that's it. Then again I don't use them often and even now the time's over I do find myself thinking before I do it.
Corvus - I think spec (or speculative) fiction can be an umbrella term for sci-fi and fantasy, if only to make it easier for people to refer to them both as SF (which can stand for several things as an abbreviation), especially in bookshops or libraries that don't differentiate the two genres. However I can see that, as the term is used to refer to both, people might mentally picture it as a combination.
Personally I'd say that spec fic is an umbrella term. Stuff that is a mix of sci-fi and fantasy I'd probably describe as science fantasy (which can also be called SF) or as steampunk or whatever specific subgenre it is.

Re: Brainstorm: What images do you get ...
So maybe in the future, the term will describe a new genre of combined fantasy and SF?
