Re: Interesting Quotes Thread

Well I would... but after some searching I mostly have found this quote being used in lots of places. I guess I could try and figure out the person... but that looks like it might be some what tricky.

Re: Interesting Quotes Thread

Big quote for today. emoticon

An architect's first work is apt to be spare and clean. He knows he doesn't know what he's doing, so he does it carefully and with great restraint.

As he designs the first work, frill after frill and embellishment after embellishment occur to him. These get stored away to be used "next time." Sooner or later the first system is finished, and the architect, with firm confidence and a demonstrated mastery of that class of systems, is ready to build a second system.

This second is the most dangerous system a man ever designs. When he does his third and later ones, his prior experiences will confirm each other as to the general characteristics of such systems, and their differences will identify those parts of his experience that are particular and not generalizable.

The general tendency is to over-design the second system, using all the ideas and frills that were cautiously sidetracked on the first one. The result, as Ovid says, is a "big pile."

That's quite a famous person, though I didn't know so much about him. So I went and looked him up at Wikipedia here. He really seems a bit more modern then most people of his time from that and that quote seems to be something he would say. emoticon

No source for this one sadly, but it seems pretty true to me. emoticon

There is never time to do it right, but always time to do it over.

And another I found a bit later, also no attribution, but I figure it could be referring to rounding. emoticon

For large values of one, one equals two, for small values of two.

"Nor was this sloop of mine purely an engineer's conceit. She was born of
song and sculp-ture, too. I could hear it in the hum of her rigging. I
could see it in the flare of her hull. She owed a debt to the epics of
Homer and the fugues of Bach. She was an eloquent fusion of the war within
ourselves, the war which tears us apart, the ceaseless conflict between
science and art." Richard Bode, First You Have to Row a Little Boat

This one I guess is from China and probably some centuries old as well, considering who is quoted as source... emoticon

Mhm. Just found one from Friedrich Nietzsche that says something similar:

All obstacles and difficulties are but stairsteps on which we climb higher.

(My rather inept translation.)
