I wonder if this person has a point...

Certainly there are things in life that money can't buy, But it's very funny -- did you ever try buying them without money?

A taste for irony has kept more hearts from breaking than a sense of humor, for it takes irony to appreciate the joke which is on oneself.

I just lifted this one from the EFT newsletter, because I really like it:

"Nothing is so strong as gentleness." Ralph W. Sockman

I'm sure it's not always true, but ... I like it. emoticon

Haha! The funny part about that is that I've seen Weber use the quote in other non-Honorverse books. And it's REALLY odd to have it come out of someone else's mouth!

Besides, wasn't that originally her first captain's quote that SHE stole? Bachfish, or something like that. emoticon Yes, I like the books.

Can't 100% agree with this, though I certainly understand the sentiment.

Yeah, that one has been fairly controversial through out time. But it certainly gets you to think about how much a war is really worth it.

The society which scorns excellence in plumbing as a humble activity and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy: neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.

War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other's children.

That one's more fitting with my personal philosophy than Cicero's above.

Also, I apparently never commented on the previous quote, but the ending line ("neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water") was really clever.

Haha! It definitely has a truthful feel to it, regardless of whether or not Churchill actually said it. Though, from what histories I've read of the time, Churchill might also have said/thought:

"Brits always do the right thing, but only after they have exhausted every other possibility."

If I recall, he was amazingly frustrated with his own government at the beginning of the war!

An Outside Context Problem is the sort of thing most civilizations encounter just once, and which they tend to encounter rather in the same way a sentence encounters a full stop.
-"Excession," definition of an OCP

For anyone wondering what an Outside Context Problem might be, this quote might be helpful and also somewhat interesting. emoticon

"The usual example given to illustrate an Outside Context Problem was imagining you were a tribe on a largish, fertile island; you'd tamed the land, invented the wheel or writing or whatever, the neighbours were cooperative or enslaved but at any rate peaceful and you were busy raising temples to yourself with all the excess productive capacity you had, you were in a position of near-absolute power and control which your hallowed ancestors could hardly have dreamed of and the whole situation was just running along nicely like a canoe on wet grass... when suddenly this bristling lump of iron appears sailless and trailing steam in the bay and these guys carrying long funny-looking sticks come ashore and announce you've just been discovered, you're all subjects of the Emperor now, he's keen on presents called tax and these bright-eyed holy men would like a word with your priests."

Re: Interesting Quotes Thread

I have recently 'discovered' a stand up comedian named Mitch Hedberg.. he would do a lot of observational comedy.. and I've been reading a lot of his quotes...
---
There was a product on late night TV that you could attach to your garden hose - "You can water your hard-to-reach plants with this." Who would make their plants hard to reach? That seems so very mean. I know you need water, but I'm going to make you hard to reach. "Think like a cactus!"
-Mitch Hedberg
---
Some people might not find some of his jokes funny.. but for some reason I always find Observational comedy the funniest.. and sometimes even more thought provoking than some things that aren't even supposed to be a joke.

I stole this from a NaNo email. emoticon (Thanks, Tryllyam!)

Sometimes you have to go on when you don't feel like it, and sometimes you're doing good work when it feels like all you're managing is to shovel **** from a sitting position.
Stephen King

(And I bet he was referring to writing!)
