Today

(stole this)

On October 22nd 1968 - Apollo 7 splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean. The spacecraft had orbited the Earth 163 times.
That must have lost it's appeal pretty quickly; "look there's the great wall of China again... and again... and again... and again..."

Re: Today

Well luckily they don't orbit over the same piece each time, so I imagine they only had a few chances to really see it. emoticon

Yeah, I'm guessing (but don't know since I haven't bothered checking) that Apollo 7 would have been launched into a fairly simple, "cheap" non-equatorial orbit. So each time it went over whatever-longitude-the-Great-Wall-is-at, they'd have been at a different latitude.

Besides, they'd have been sleeping 1/4-1/3 of those times. And probably not just looking down for the rest!

Re: Today

That's about what I expected, since Cape Canaveral is somewhere about 28 degrees latitude.

Did you know that during the cold war, a lot of the astronauts really enjoyed going into the rare high-inclination orbits? I forget which shuttle astronaut it was, but he at one point figured out the exact time they'd be flying over Moscow and positioned himself on the toilet at that time -- just so he could... err.. defecate on the Kremlin!

Re: Today

On this day in England in 1814 (yes, you read that right) the first modern plastic surgery was performed. Joseph Carpue performed reconstructive nose surgery on two British army officers after practising on corpses. He'd heard about the surgeries that had been performed in India for 2,500 years.

Better than a gold nose, I guess. Assuming you didn't die from infection, given that the germ theory of disease was still 50+ years from development! Yikes!
