Nano, Mini-Nano, Nano-Flash '09

(I'm sorry to get this up so late, I had planned to do it the end of last week, so that we could discuss it over the weekend. For those of you who haven't heard, my kids and I were diagnosed with H1N1 the end of last week and I'm just now getting over it.)

emoticon Back for our third year! emoticon

Mystical Adventures members can commit and keep up with each other's progress in the Scriptorium. If you do not currently have access to the Scriptorium apply as prompted.

What is NanoWrimo?:
"National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30."

The Nanowrimo site can be found here:

NanoWrimo

The website allows you to track your progress, and that of your friends, network with other authors, browse forums, participate in writing challenges, and listen to NanoWrimo related web-casts. Many regions offer meetings, "get togethers" and and other Nano related events for participants.

What is Mini-Nano?:
Mini-Nano is a short story contest, conceived in 2007 to meet the needs of MA members unable or unready to commit to writing an entire novel in a month. The rules and reward will remain the same this year.

"Everyone who manages to write 5,000 words in November and posts them in the Scriptorium, will be awarded a special title."

It should be noted that 5,000 words is only the minimum. If you write 5,500 words, or 10,000 you will still win. The important part is making a goal to write, and sticking to it.

What is Nano-Flash? I'm going to make a few small changes to the Nano-Flash challenge this year. In the spirit of Nano you are invited to write a short narrative piece using the number 5 in some form. Your story could be 50 words in length, or 500. Can you tell a story with only 5 sentences of dialog? How about 5 action sentences? You are invited to attempt to write 5 comic pages. Regardless of the format you choose, make it fast and fun.

Presenting the all new...the latest the greatest...
Fun with Words. As an alternate category to the Nano-Flash challenge, you may start a thread in the Scriptorium and post one sentence per day. Don't have a plan, just have fun. If you are feeling particularly inspired on any particular day, feel free to post more. You can also pick a partner and take turns posting a sentence. As the stories posted in the Fun with Words category are largely stream of conscious, we won't crit them in any way. We will only offer encouragement to keep going, and stroke your ego when your sentence of the day is particularly moving or witty. Since this is the first year to run this category, I will post an example in the Scriptorium.

Just as in prior years, completing NanoWrimo, or Mini-Nano will qualify you for a special title here at MA. Finishing Nano-Flash or Fun with Words, will only garner you the satisfaction of a job well done and the respect of your peers.

Tommorow I will post results from prior years competitions.

That's a great idea! I love the mini-Nano, especially as I won't be able to do the real thing.

Thanks, BaneBlade, for offering such fun! emoticon

Not sure if I'll be able to do a full-out NaNo this year, but I think I'll give this mini version a try. ^^

Here are the results for our '08 challenges.

Our very own Corvus beat Nano, writing over fifty thousand words, while being a Nano Municipal Liason, and a moderator here at MA!

Our very first member to take advantage of Nano in a Flash was none other than Dragonlady, who finished not one but TWO stories.

Tryingtowrite finished Mini-Nano for the second year in a row!

Blitzen, Haadad, and myself also participated in the big Nano, and while we didn't finish, we hopefully got some good writing out of the effort.

In '07 Firelfanz, Haadad, and BaneBlade all finished the big Nano and Tryingtowrite finished Mini-Nano. (If I've left anyone out speak up. I wasn't keeping records that far back.)

Fun with words sounds like fun, BaneBlade! Are we going to have threads discussing our stories/plans like the other years? Or just talk about them afterward?

I'd procrastinate now, but it would be easier tomorrow.

Trying, my plan is to let people make comments in the Fun with Words threads as they're being written.

You can brainstorm or discuss story ideas in the Practice hall. (Is this still the way you want to do it, Firle?)

Discussions, or crits of the Mini-Nano, or Nano-Flash stories, can be seperate threads in the Scriptorium, or can be posted in the story thread after the author has completely posted the story in it's entirety. I'll leave that up to the individual authors.

Yep, that's fine. Actual work should go into the scriptorium, and since I need to let you in there, please let me know in this thread.

We're drawing near the end folks.

I'll probably post my last fun with words update on Monday, as I have minimal internet access over the weekend.

I'll leave the stories up in the Scriptorium for a little while so everyone can have one more chance to read them. Then we'll start cleaning the sub-forum up to make room for our next challenge.
