posticon Scientists study zombie attack scenarios

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8206280.stm

quote:

If zombies actually existed, an attack by them would lead to the collapse of civilisation unless dealt with quickly and aggressively.

That is the conclusion of a mathematical exercise carried out by researchers in Canada.

quote:

The study has been welcomed by one of the world's leading disease specialists, Professor Neil Ferguson, who is one of the UK government's chief advisors on controlling the spread of swine flu.

"The paper considers something that many of us have worried about - particularly in our younger days - of what would be a feasible way of tackling an outbreak of a rapidly spreading zombie infection," said Professor Ferguson, from Imperial College London.

However he thinks that some of the assumptions made in the paper might be unduly alarmist.

Oh that's alright then.

Most interesting study of how to control a zombie outbreak, indeed. emoticon

I'm just sooooo impressed that our scientists are using their time wisely studying important things. emoticon

I hope to get my hands on a copy of Pride and Prejudice With Zombies. I've heard it's actually quite good.

Absolutely! emoticon

I have a friend who once ran a scenario that tested whether our gravity-measuring satellite could observe the mass redistribution in Europe in August. His theory was that everyone from northern Europe goes on vacation to the Mediterranean during that time period -- taking their mass with them! So he ran the calculations.

Alas, it appears that the mass redistribution that would occur if most north Europeans visited the coast during the month is still less than our satellite errors. ;(

Plus your friend's theory was rather ... inclusive. In fact, this summer, many north Europeans stay in their country, thus sadly not redistributing their masses in great numbers to the south.

Still, it's a funny idea. Maybe you can measure the yearly travels of whales? Umm. Probably not, as they are in water.

I wonder when the whale population rises if the water level rises as well? emoticon

I'd procrastinate now, but it would be easier tomorrow.

Well, you'd have to take into account the loading factors (the changes in gravity on the ocean due to the motion of people). That's waaaay too much work for me!

Hmmm, an interesting question. My first guess would be that it would increase sea levels, due to increased storage of carbon holding materials as well as that whale fluids on average should be less dense then sea water. Thus causing the volume that all water in the ocean is filling to get larger, atleast on a first glance that is what I would say.... emoticon
