Some Basic Horse Lore Horses are the traditional transport in fantasy stories. However, horse lore is no longer part of daily life in our society. Most of us have read up a bit on horses (or actually had contact with them and/or ridden horses), yet there is still information that's useful to have. Let's collect such information here.
For example, the author of a long-distance riding book I have suggests that horses can walk 30 - 50km a day - that's the distance he plans for group trips.
I remember reading (but can't back it up right now), that average horses can manage up to 50km a day, while excellent and very well trained ones can even handle up to 70km per day, on a regular schedule. Even so, horses and riders should have one rest-day per week.
Re: Some Basic Horse Lore I think there are plenty of individual differences that should be kept in mind.
For example, I bet a courier horse with little luggage and a lean rider can make it further than a steed which carries a hero in full gear plus supplies for three weeks.
