Poll: Magical Creatures
Which magical creatures do you like best?
Why? And would you use it in a story?

Re: Poll: Magical Creatures
You don't have an other option... ^^; I mean, what about forinstance fairies? Or other magical creatures? And those are cute incidentally, so that is why I would find them interesting.

Shucks, I did forget the "Other" option.
Still, you can explain what you'd prefer in a post.

Technically I did talk about fairies being cute. Hope some other people will weigh in though, kind of curious if they prefer something.

Re: Poll: Magical Creatures
This was the most difficult choice. I would prefer all of the above
However, I love the phoniex. And I am using them in one of my stories.

Mermaids. Call it the Disney influence.
I would like to use all creatures. With twists, most likely.

Re: Poll: Magical Creatures
I love dragons.
They are very cool and inspiring creatures.
I use them all the time, but I try to make them different each time.
I have used the cliche dragon guarding the treasure, I've made intelligent, angelic dragons, and intelligent demonic dragons.
I like the idea, but I like to add my own twist too.

Re: Poll: Magical Creatures
I think I would have to go with faries, too. But not really because they are cute... almost the opposite in fact. Cute faries are a fairly modern invention (and I blame Disney for them... not that it's necessarily their doing, I just like blaming them).
I think that you can do a lot, psychologically speaking, with "dark" faries. One of the earliest stories I can remember reading as a child was George MacDonald's "Cross Purposes" and it gave me a deep respect of the power and capriciousness of fairy kind. Not the kind of people you want to be dealing with... except you do want to, of course...
--- "Some who have read the book have found it boring, absurd, or contemptible; and I have no cause to complain, since I have similar opinions of their works, or of the kind of writing that they evidently prefer." -- J. R. R. Tolkien

Re: Poll: Magical Creatures
Unicorns, as voted by the romantic in me. Or Dark Fairies. Infact, dark fantasy creatures are better in general. Evil dragons, the mermaids from Peter Pan, the fairies from War of the Flowers.

Re: Poll: Magical Creatures
Centaurs, in my opinion, are the most solid piece of fantasy I've ever read. Piers Anthony did them serious credit in his Xanth works, and I've been somewhat obsessed with them for awhile now.
I've never had any in any stories I've written, but I think that's about to change.

Re: Poll: Magical Creatures
It was a toss up between dragons and unicorns... dragons just beat unicorns by a neck!
I've always loved dragons for some reason, I think maybe it's because they are a bit evil, but then there are always the cute ones like old Puff.

Re: Poll: Magical Creatures
I voted centaur.
When I was younger I thought the Centaur was my sign (saggittarius). I was disappointed to find out it was "the archer" part of the usual icon. Even more annoyed that Saggittarius pendants always showed some muscular male centaur weilding the bow. But now I finally have one that's female.

Re: Poll: Magical Creatures
It was a split decision between Dragon and Phoenix. They're both my favorites. I hated deciding between them.

Re: Poll: Magical Creatures
Pegasus, Centaurs, and Selkies are the only ones I have not incorporated (in my own twisted fashion) into my fantasy world. Namely because I decided to take on a friend's challenge and not have horses (thus I got to have fun creating replacements). Without horses, I didn't see why a flying horse and a race of half-horses would be around.
As for selkies...
I had never even heard of them until this post. At least not to the point of remembering them. Wereseals (went to Wikipedia)?
Personally it boils down to the Dragon and Phoenix for me. I even borrowed an old Chinese tale and have the Dragon and the Phoenix stories tied together (much like Yin and Yang).
And they set stuff on fire...fire is always good...it calls to me...

Re: Poll: Magical Creatures
I've only heard of Selkies because I used to go to Brownies/Guides, whichever one it is that has the named patrols after little mythical creatures.

I wasn't aware of that, to be honest!
Brownies are what girl scouts sell - and they're practical girl scouts as well!

Should I have?
I was really an Enid Blyton sort of child. I preferred The Hobbit, Mistress Marsham's Repose and Mervyn Mouse!

I suppose if I have to pick one of the above, it would have to be dragon, but they're all so typical. Faeries are cool though!

Out of this list, I'd say Dragons, but Harpies come in a close second.
