Shapeshifter

One of my story ideas involves a teenager who can shapeshift - with the story taking place on Earth.

Now, I realize that shapeshifting is a favourite element of fantasy, but is there any way to treat this at least partly in a scientific way?

You could try to involve extremely advanced technology that can go in on a microscopic level and switch around the DNA, like bionic nanobots

Re: Shapeshifter

X-Files has a great episodes on a guy who could morphe into anyone he saw. They found the body/corpse of an parent mummified in the attic (he'd been impersonating his own re-tired elder to collect the pension as a supplement to his income).

In general the idea would be that the body has a "mutated" phisiology. If you wanted this person to turn into an animal, for example, they may have an extra knee joint in the shin as well as muscles that might retract and otherwise elongated spine and so fourth. Of course now what we're saying is that the "mutation" is the beast that can take a humanoid form. Add a psychosis of some kind, possibly the mutant was ridiculed so they work so hard at looking normal they repress thier "true self" so much so they've splintered thier personality - the "beast" may even have highted aggression and thus strength and speed through seer "rage"
