Day-of-the-Week Calculator

So, you're going to write a story in alternate history? And you need to know at which day of the week Napoleon died, but all you can find is the date?

Look here: Day of the Week Calculator

And if you want to know how it's done, wikipedia has the math for it.

Unless, of course, you want to know what day of the week something happened before ~1530, when the switch from Julian to Gregorian calendars happened. emoticon But that's just me being difficult! Nice tables, Firle.

Yes, that's the catch. But I think there are even calculators for that.

Re: Day-of-the-Week Calculator

Oh, I'm sure there are. Those silly astronomers need them (and historians too, I guess, but who cares about them!). Though at some point it'd get to be pretty much impossible, since different groups of people used totally different calendar systems...

For the record, anyone interested in a good, intriguing, non-technical history of the calendar and time-telling should check out this book:

"Calendar: Humanity's Epic Struggle to Determine a True and Accurate Year" by David Ewing Duncan

It's pretty cool... at least, if you're a geek like me! Also, it might give you some insight if you're going to write in a medieval-type (or earlier) society.

Re: Day-of-the-Week Calculator

Or if you have Excel you can open a blank worksheet and type this into any cell:

=TEXT(WEEKDAY("04/06/07"), "dddd")

Substitute the appropriate date for "04/06/07" (and swap the day/month if you're American).

Or if you want a bit less typing (but a bit more thinking):

=WEEKDAY("04/06/07")

Will give you the day as a digit (Sunday=1, Saturday=7).
