Conventions

How important are they? Have you been to one? Have you done a reading already? Are they useful?

I have been wondering since I saw the Eurocon thing. I know I'd like to go and meet Anne McCaffrey (who knows how much longer she'll be around?), and mingle with authors and publishers.

I've been to two smallish cons so far, but haven't read anything yet - lack of published material makes that difficult.

So, what do you think?

Re: Conventions

I've never been to a convention and I don't know if I would. I'm not really drawn to that type of gathering. I don't mind meeting authors, but I prefer book signings for that.

I think meeting publishers would be the main benefit to going, but I'm not ready to look for a publisher yet emoticon

Re: Conventions

Do go, at least once.
If you do, you will find Anne quite delightful, though in a fan-accessable setting they insulate her pretty well. Todd, her son, is quite protective, and she has a pretty protecive posse as well. I met her under ideal circumstances, in Chicago at the Nebulas where she was honored as Grend Master. It helped some that one of her co-writers and friends is a friend of mine, too, Elizabeth Anne Scarborough.
Big cons are sometimes difficult to get in as a pro, but if you do, you will have access to the green room. I have had many great conversations with many of my writer heroes, as peers (which is the best part and warms my fanly heart!) in green rooms. Plus, you will likely get to be on a panel or two with at least one "star" each con. This last year I have hung out with or been on panels with Jay Lake, Larry Niven, Barbara Hambley, Dave Duncan, Gordon Van Gelder, Greg Bear, John Dalmas and many others.
There are generally several writer-oriented panels as well, where you can ask the very successful questions about publishing tracks, plotting, writing from an outline, and many other subjects.
