Exercise #4 - 8/21/06 - View of a Princess
Here's another exercise for stretching your fingers and your imagination.
There's high energy in the air. Looks are burning, emotions run wild. Tell me what happens - from the point of view of a princess.
Have fun!

Re: Exercise #4 - 8/21/06
She stepped out onto her balcony to see the mob of people shouting. At its center were two men, on the verge of a fight. A quick glance to the ends of the square showed Royal Guards working their way through the crowd and a part of her wondered, or even wished, if they would be kept from preventing a fight.
Leaning dangerously over her balcony the princess tried to see the two men clearly, both seemed well dressed in leather and fine threads. She imagined them both to be adventures or mercenaries living exciting lives that she only hear of from bards and traveling merchants. She hoped that a fight would break out and even hoped the guards would arrest both men, only then, in the confines of a cell would she be able to meet them. And as if she willed it to happen one of the men, the long haired one, moved as if to hit the other. It happened so fast that the princess wasn’t even sure what took place. But the same long haired man who made the move to attack was suddenly laying on the ground, the crowd was roaring and she was too was cheering just as the guards reached them both.
Springing off the rail she clapped unconsciously, and while thoroughly entertained by the short lived event she was even more excited about the arrest. She would indeed have her chance to meet both men, and if all went well, that short haired winner may even end up being perfect for the dangerous task she had in mind.

I like the idea. And sometimes, a tiny scene like that can trigger a story.

Re: Exercise #4 - 8/21/06
Darena slumped in her throne. They were fighting, again.
Finco whacked Plinad across the face. Then they leapt at each other. They rolled across the floor snarling and grappling.
She didn't dare stop them, for fear of suffering damage to herself. Not with the wedding coming up.
At last they broke apart and she grabbed them. "Some wedding present you two were." She glared at the two small kittens.
I just clicked on one randomly and wrote. I'm not sure if this is what you ment, Firle.

Re: Exercise #4 - 8/21/06 - View of a Princess
This ended up being a bit longer than I'd expected...
Ri-kalsa
Laria crouched lower in the back of the merchant’s wagon so she would not be seen by either side. She pried the fabrics in front of her apart just enough to peek out and see what was going on.
Orina was still standing unmoving in the center of the market square, eyes closed. The mist that, only minutes earlier, had allowed Laria to run from her side and hide had thickened, surrounding the castle mage in a sort of airy bubble. Laria stared as the Grylani soldiers fired their sidearms into it, to no avail. The pellets slowed and fell to the ground long before they reached Orina. Laria had read of such magic, but had never seen it performed before. Curiosity tempered her fear.
Orina’s familiar voice touched her mind. Are you safe now?
Laria nodded, though no one could possibly see it. I think so. I’m hidden in a wagon at the edge of the market.
Good, the castle mage’s voice came again. Then don’t move. I’ll end this and come and get you in a minute. Just stay put! And close your eyes when the time comes.
Yes, teacher. As if she would have moved anywhere now, given the circumstances!
Laria watched with wide eyes as the mist surrounding her teacher began to swirl. The soldiers backed up, calling worried questions to their commanders now. But before any new orders could be dispensed, the cloud of mist blew apart, ripping into the nearest line of soldiers. They fell, clawing at their eyes. The second line cried out as well, gripping their bare faces in pain. Laria gasped with joy, then bit her tongue to keep from crying out.
But a second look brought the butterflies back to her stomach. There were still more soldiers surrounding Orina which the magical mist had not touched – and now the mist was gone, and Orina was vulnerable! Some of the solders noticed that as well and fired angrily at the mage.
Orina opened her eyes.
With a fearful gasp, Laria slammed hers shut. Most people thought all magic was like the swirling acid mist Orina had raised, or the firebolts that the Perkin mages liked so much. But Orina had taught Laria well, so she knew that the most powerful magics came from within, using the burning emotions of the mage to scour the minds of others. Ri-kalsa, it was called in the mages’ tongue: “Soul of Flame”. To even look upon a mage in such a state was to tempt death.
Laria heard the screams. She heard the panicked footfalls as people ran from the marketplace. She heard the bodies fall.
And then she heard nothing at all for a long moment.
“Come on, Laria,” Orina said from a few steps away. “It’s safe now.”
Laria squinted through half-open eyes to see her teacher standing just outside the wagon. Nothing happened when she glanced at Orina’s face, so she stood up and opened her eyes fully. “Are they... gone?” she asked.
Orina looked down at the ground. She nodded slowly. “Come on. We can talk about it later, but we have to leave now before anyone else finds us. After that display of my power, they’re hardly going to allow my pupil to live – even if you are their princess.”

Wow, Reythia, that's good.
You should remove it from here, put it into a safe area and ponder where to submit it.

Haha! Thanks, Firle, but it's not part of a story or anything. Just something I came up with off the top of my head while sitting here at work. I don't really have the time to expand the idea into a proper story, unfortunately.

Well, there are even markets for snippets like that. Flash fiction is very much the fashion of today.
It's your choice, though.

Seriously!?
I guess I just never read anything like that, so I'd never think of publishing it either. I'm very much a long story type of reader.
Huh. Maybe I'll look into it, if I have time. In any case, thanks for the compliment.
