Different writing communities

Maybe this is a question none of you can really answer, but it's something that I'm just barely beginning to understand. I'd love to discuss this in more detail:

I am in the unique situation of being a member of two very different writing communities: on the one hand the English-language writers I know through Runboard, and on the other hand the German writers I'm getting to know through another board.

I never expected that "everything" would be so incredibly different. The German market works in a completely different way, with hardly any magazines for short stories, for example. Instead, anthologies rule the day, with "calls for submission", and stories written for them. The stories themselves function with totally different word counts (much shorter), and are judged through very different ciriteria. Even planning is handled differently.

Have any of you experienced something similiar? Does this happen across genre borders? Or between US and UK authors?

Rather interesting, I wonder if this is a reaction to a smaller market, or if it is more of a cultural differance. emoticon

Good question. My experience has only been in US and UK markets, so I don't really have an answer. There certainly are many similar calls for submission in the English-language market as well. As you become better known, more of these will open for you to participate in, as quite often many are by invitation only.
