Stumble and Fall
A dusty road ahead
I walk uneven ground
and the sun and heat stings
eyes that seemed to have been closed
for an eternity
I adjust my course
feeling disorientated for a minute
I lose ground
me feet fail me
and I tumble down
I wince, nursing a bleeding dirty wound
the child inside whimpers
muddy tears and sodden face
clear, liquid yet mournful eyes
that implore to me
I put the child to my hip
and carry on down the road
taking care of my step
for a further fall
I have no idea where the road leads
I persist on
and if, I should stumble again
the person who will pick me off the ground
will be myself
