can they change?

 My ex narc always said he felt guilty for how he treated me. That I deserved better. How he doesn't know what his deal is. Ect. Do actual narcs do this? He's already found another girl. He actually found her while we were dating so of course he dumped me. Is it possible that if narcs like somebody enough they will change without therapy and not emotionally abuse the next person if they want to/try hard enough?
