2008 Top 5 Movies Worldwide Status

These are the movies I will be tracking:

Released domestic/foreign:
10,000 BC
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Wall E
The Dark Knight
Madagascar 2

So far the top 5 are:

1 Cloverfield $145.9
2 27 Dresses $86.3
3 Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour $59.1
4 Rambo $57.5
5 Fool's Gold $45.9

Of course,
movies are just getting started and there is much to go yet! If one of the predicted movies is in the Top 5 but then drops off it, I will no longer be posting it. The only exception would be is if I know it still has some countries to be released in in which case there is still hope for it to make it back into the top.

'Jumper' Teleports to the Top

Jumper, catapulted to the top of the weekend with $32 million four-day. Exploiting the fun and spectacle of the characters' ability to teleport in its marketing campaign, the fantastical action thriller's opening was on the high end for one lacking popular source material like past President's Day champs Ghost Rider and Daredevil.

The latest fantasy spawned from the success of The Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter series, The Spiderwick Chronicles spun $24.7 million. Though the opening gross was lower than Bridge to Terabithia on the same weekend last year, it wasn't too shabby considering the picture looked nearly indistinguishable from all the other recent fantasies in its advertisements.

By garnering about as much initial interest as its predecessor, Step Up 2 the Streets kicked off successfully with $22.1 million four-day.

The top grosser of the calendar year thus far has been Juno with $97 million and the dramatic comedy delivered another strong hold over the weekend, down 18 percent to bring its overall tally to $124.1 million. Fellow Best Picture nominee No Country for Old Men notched the smallest decline of the weekend among wide releases, off 15 percent for an impressive $61.3 million total. Other Best Picture nominees, There Will Be Blood, Atonement and Michael Clayton, haven't performed as well but have found larger audiences than other lower rung nominees of recent years.

Last Weekend's Around the World Roundup: 'Jumper' Hops to First in Debut

Supplying an audience eager for action, Jumper filled the void with a superb $29.4 million start, topping the foreign box office.

Boosted by France's second-ranked $5.7 million opening, National Treasure: Book of Secrets placed third internationally with $12.7 million.

27 Dresses entered the Top Five with a $7.6 million weekend.

On the eve of the Academy Awards, Best Picture nominees expanded and none garnered blockbuster business. With $28.8 million thus far, Juno has yet to post strong results in non-English speaking territories, while No Country has done decently across the board with $30.8 million. There Will Be Blood premiered two weekends ago but expanded nationwide in the U.K. with an unspectacular $1.1 million for a $1.7 million total. The period drama also added 16 markets but none opened higher than fourth place. Michael Clayton's campaign has wound down for the most part and it will end up grossing less overseas than it did in America. Oscar's brightest star, box office wise, has been Atonement with $66.3 million. The romantic drama was the most translatable, akin to The English Patient, and it has several important markets ahead, including China, Denmark, Japan and South Korea. Atonement picked up a good portion of its business before nominations were announced, including a whopping $24 million from the U.K.

Several movies that received lesser nominations from the Academy have had much more successful campaigns. American Gangster will likely surpass The Departed, Sweeney Todd should easily clear $100 million and La Vie en Rose was 2007's second-highest grossing non-English picture.

Domestic Article:

'Vantage Point' Angles for Weekend Lead

Vantage Point launched successfully, it pieced together $22.8 million on. Produced for nearly $40 million, the picture was sold as a slick action mystery, centered on the political intrigue of a reliable assassination plot.

Last weekend's three top grossing pictures, Jumper, The Spiderwick Chronicles and Step Up 2 the Streets, held within normal post-Presidents Day ranges.

The Spiderwick Chronicles faded 34 percent holding to the number two position grossing $13.1 million for $43.6 million in 11 days.

Jumper fell 54 percent to third place with $12.7 million, propelling its total to $56.2 million in 11 days.

Step Up 2 the Streets had a slightly smaller decline than the first Step Up, down 48 percent to $9.6 million with a total of $41.4 million.

As a whole, 2007's crop of Best Picture Oscar nominees has been more popular than the ones from 2006 and 2005, and Juno will soon be the highest grossing nominee in four years. The nominees again had the best holds among wide releases. No Country for Old Men added more theaters and rose 21 percent to an estimated $2.3 million, bringing its total to $64.2 million. Juno was down 11 percent to an estimated $4.1 million for a $130.4 million tally and There Will Be Blood and Atonement were also off less than 20 percent.

Last Weekend's Around the World Roundup:

'Jumper' Clings to Top Spot

Despite the new competition, Jumper led the foreign box office again last weekend grabbing $21.7 million from 40 territories for a $60.4 million total. Generally, the action picture has had average holds for its genre and continued to open to higher numbers than last year's Ghost Rider.

Climbing to second place, Rambo showed some muscle, earning $11 million from 34 territories for a $38.9 million total.
Thanks to an excellent $2.4 million start in Italy, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street placed fourth over the weekend with $8.5 million from 52 nations for an $81 million total.

With no new territories, National Treasure: Book of Secrets fell to fifth place with $7.7 million from 30 markets for a $213.2 million total.
In sixth with $7.6 million, Juno finally started to show some strength. The comedy's overall gross, now at $39.2 million, is still nowhere near its domestic run but it is on track to soon exceed Superbad.

No Country for Old Men has tallied $37.4 million thus far and will try to capitalize on its Best Picture Oscar win to hit $100 million. If it fails, it would join Crash as the only two Best Picture winners not to reach the milestone in the past 15 years.

The first movie among our predicted movies is due to release this weekend.

10,000 BC

it will be highlighted just like last year's movies were to distinguish it from non-predicted movies.

'10,000 B.C.' Dominates Weak Period

A big budget, prehistoric adventure and a Disney family comedy did not rejuvenate the fossilized box office. After this year's mammoth first month and a half, business has recently slowed, and this weekend was the least attended early March frame since 2001.

Hunting for moviegoers on approximately 5,100 screens at 3,410 locations, 10,000 B.C. gathered $35.9 million. It was a solid start for an ancient action picture and for this time of year.
was modest with $2.5 million at 535 venues.

Indicative of the box office downturn, holdovers wilted in the face of 10,000 B.C.. Last weekend's top grosser, Semi-Pro, tumbled 62 percent to $5.8 million for $24.7 million in ten days. Holding much better though not well, Vantage Point pulled ahead, down 43 percent to $7.4 million for $51.5 million in 17 days. The Spiderwick Chronicles faded 46 percent, its worst drop yet and steeper than Bridge to Terabithia at the same point, while The Other Boleyn Girl lost 51 percent.

True to the meager impact of the Academy Awards and the fleeting moment in the sun they cast, major Oscar movies dissipated as well. Best Picture winner No Country for Old Men collapsed 62 percent to $1.5 million, though the crime drama has collected a sturdy $72.6 million. There Will Be Blood leaked 58 percent for a less prosperous $38.7 million tally, Atonement fell 61% for a $50.5 million total and the calendar year's highest grosser, Juno, took its hardest hit yet, off 40 percent.
