Isn't the upcoming Disgaea infinite a Visual Novel? Im all for that game coming to the U.S. It looks fun. but overall I agree VN games arn't needed in abundance here in the US...even some of the consele ones are rather risque.

Yes it is... But that's not what we've been saying. We do need more VNs here. That's not it. It's just that I wouldn't like NISA to be publishing them, when there are better ones out there.

I don't want this company to be associating with that sort of thing, not because I don't want to see the game, but because for me, its my mental image of them. Some of these are rather risque even in their clean forms, I agree.

Indeed: http://www.siliconera.com/2009/08/23/indie-visual-novel-removed-from-xbox-live-due-to-inappropriate-visual-cues/

This indie game was removed from Xbox live for inappropriate visual cues that "remind players of sexual violence". Thanks, Microsoft, for protecting our fragile psyches from such hideous filth. We appreciate it.

Come on, Grand Theft Auto is ok, but a run-of-the-mill ren'ai romance that a 13-year-old in Japan might pick is suddenly crossing the line? What would YOU rather your teen be playing? A dating sim or a murder sim?

Why our culture gets so bent out of shape when it comes to sexual innuendo and suggestive situations is beyond me...if you stop to think about it, it's really rather absurd. I shake my head every time I hear someone whine that Ar Tonelico is too risque.

Anyway...back to the topic. Yes, I agree that localization of VNs is best left to those that have dedicated themselves to releasing them. I'm a big fan of VNs, but NISA made their name localizing RPGs, not VNs. They found their niche; they don't need to jeapordize their business by expanding into uncharted territory, well you know, just because. I'm 100% behind them localizing RPG/ADV hybrids like the Ar Tonelico and Sakura Taisen series, however. Dating sim like elements are becoming increasingly popular in RPGs anyway: just look at Persona, Star Ocean, and well, most of Bioware's catalogue. Hell, the recent Dragon Age trailers even feature clips from the sex scenes. :P Microsoft, how could you?!

You sum up my points to the T. The only ones who should be shot at gunpoint here are those darn insensitive politicians and private lobbyists who think that Japan is corrupt and try to ban the sale of these games here.

I remember that indie game quite well. It's clean and yet, they've banned it? That's absurd. Why haven't they banned the sale of the AT series or Sakura Wars here(these are most prevalent games at the moment, but I could have picked others), those games have equally suggestive themes.

Sometimes I don't understand why they let things through, while others get the no-go. It's all pretty much similar content anyway. We get some dating sims, but not others? Why? I pose this question for all of these people who have not given publishers a chance.

Japan as a society is more sexually represed then the U.S. actually (thats why theres innudeno in almost all animations nowadays thats the only way they can get it out)

since theres more ways for people in the US & Europe to get it out its not seen in animation very often & when it is it causes a stir because many still think cartoons are for kids (even though this is wrong.)

Plus I personalyl hate GTA just as much as some of the smutty VN Games.

but I think Violence is just overall accaptable worldwide because its more in are nature then senusality. I mean everyone LOVES Violecene, but not everyone loves the other thing, for various reasons, culutural, personal, etc.

Not all VNs are like that though, there are some that can have really nice stories. Some are just ok, but there have been others that have made me think about life and its values(no, I'm serious). If you look past the characters and think of them as people in real life, barring all the unrealistic things they do, it's really meaningful.

That's why as a medium, I think they work. All the emotions start to play out once you get into them. The visual element is what attracts me more than anything. These are not qualities you can get from any old book.

Japan is more sexually repressed because of their problems with overpopulation and their desire to preserve as much of the back country as is possible. In our case, we still have room to expand, even though the day when we too meet our limits is within sight.

In any case, bans like that occur because the wrong person happens to see them and has the willpower and charisma to influence others into following in his or her wake. Also, it was probably precisely because it WAS an indie game. They didn't have the funds or the influence to fight that kind of thing, most likely.

I'd say that's a crackdown on freedom of speech more than anything. There's no reason for them to have done that, because this case was specifically bought up not by the representatives at Microsoft in Japan, but EUROPE.

Now there's something you don't see everyday. As I've said on Gamefaqs, it's all about the feminist groups. Without their input, we would not have to deal with this sort of thing. And the fact that Japan itself produces these games at a daily rate, that does not help in the least.

Give them a big target, and they will jump at it.

That's one of the more ridiculous things I've heard. People like to hurt each other more than they like to have sex? The world seen through your eyes must be a cruel one.

Actually, no, quite the opposite: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4552010.stm

Japan's population is expected to shrink in the coming years, and the economic instability that would bring has Japan's politicians very concerned: so much so that they're trying to implement incentives for families to have more children, as well as loosen the restrictions on immigation.

And because we all love irony:
http://www.japanator.com/bbc-writer-calls-japan-slowly-dying-blames-otaku-11570.phtml

For all their so-called repression, Japan actually seems more open about sexuality than we Americans are. If anything, they're more open about sexuality and also more concerned about violence than Americans--America's preoccupation with sex in the media and permissiveness regarding violence is not necessarily the norm at all in the world at large. Not that I think either violence or sex need censoring when the audience is mature adults (meeting the age limit, if nothing else :P).
