Re: About NISA.....

The basic fact of the matter is, NISA is not going into the VN field for those exact reasons. It's way too small of a market, maybe even smaller than the market that they're appealing to now, and I can see it's not going to be profitable for them.

You have to realize what kind of market they're reaching out to. When people pick up a NISA title, they expect a special experience, and quirky gameplay. I don't see Visual Novels selling well, simply because, one, they have zero gameplay to speak of, and two, I doubt people would want to read.

To speak up, yes, I like NISA too. And I do read the occasional Visual Novel. But as a company head, what appeal would you see from doing such titles? The only way I'd see them selling is if they had other elements underlying the main portion. To note, I would not try to market "pure" Visual Novels.

If you add something to make it interesting, then maybe I would see it selling. And that's what NISA has done here. If they can find more titles similar to the AT series, or Sakura Wars, they'll have something.

An ex-Atlus employee helped with that one.

Re: About NISA.....

When a "big company" releases a broken game, generally something is done to fix it. When the response is "too bad, give us more money for more broken products", the rage train pulls out of the station.

I returned AT2, used the refund to buy Prinny, and was pleased. Prinny is an excellent game with no typoes and no bugs at all, never mind game-ending bugs. However, I will not be buying AT3, and I sold AT1 for a tidy profit.

I didn't even know about Rhapsody's bonus content; I thought I was getting a straight port of the PS1 version and bought it just for that. So in the end, this didn't burn me like it burned a lot of other people.

The DLC issue in Disgaea 2 Portable? THAT'S how you get things done! "Oops, we screwed up, have a freebie." It's a text glitch that doesn't actually affect anything and we're still getting a free character out of it.

Now, if we could make some progress on the DLC issue in Disgaea 3, that'd be great. Time to release the Complete Privilege pack, even if you need to charge a dollar for it and any old scrub can buy it. At this point, we don't care. Just get 'er done.

This is also a big part of the issue: customer expectations. The NISA label attracts RPG enthusiasts. While this overlaps glancingly with the VN crowd, that segment only represents a fraction of their overall fanbase. The average NISA fan might pick up a VN because it's NISA, only to find that for some reason it has no gameplay. By not meeting expectations, a nontypical release can thus potentially damage future sales of other games. Despite the rhetoric to the contrary, customers don't like surprises. They want a similar experience with a new coat of paint to make it feel fresh, which is why sequelemia fluorishes--because fans know exactly what to expect.

Now, if Sakura Taisen V and Ar Tonelico 3 did very well, and there was a clamor for similar games...that might be the segway needed to introduce a game that's focused on the VN side with not so much gameplay. In any case, change is something that is most effective when implemented gradually.

I don't know, I just see this as "too big" of a change to be effective. The only good thing I see from this is, that as fans, we know what kinds of games they are, and probably only "we" would buy them.

But the issue here is not with us, but with the regular gamers, they just don't see the light enough to even think about a company like NISA.

Edit:

The way they're going now, if they consider keeping it the way they've done it with these two series, and if Japan is willing to supply them with these games, I can see them succeeding in the long run. But pure reading is not going to work, it's not even their style. It will have to have some form of gameplay regardless.

I have no idea how baiting AT2 haters into an argument is going to help the situation, odinfan. Just a few months ago, you were in the same boat. Unbelievable.

If Sakura Taisen turns out good and people are still bringing up this junk, there will be hell to pay.

Nobody here "hated" AT2, numbnuts. There were just lots of people that were very disappointed with the way NISA localized the game.

Whatever you want to call yourselves. There's a far superior game coming out. Get over it. Plus, I wasn't talking to you or anyone else besides odin.

Stop jumping on me for word choice. He started this thread against better judgement, and I warned him against it since I'd seen it long before he read these boards.

There's no sense in reopening arguments. There's only 1 resolution to this situation, and that's to wait and see the next time they release a game you're interested in. Until then, enough has been said.
