Re: Magic Castle Audition
Hey there, I am out of town so I am not able to get on very much. I will think out what you and Fred both wrote and opffer an opinion....can you rework the cryptex trick so it is not based on the Davinci code"?

Re: Magic Castle Audition
Yes, it can be reworked, but I'm really wondering if it needs to be (the more I think about it)?
The movie prequel to "The DaVinci Code," "Angels and Demons" is coming out the first part of next year. The third book in the trilogy, "The Solomon Key," is due sometime this year.
DVC has had such a cultural impact, that it still remains in the public consciousness. People still seem to recognize the book, and the cryptex that I use. And the success of the effect does not totally depend on the material used.
I think I'm okay with leaving it in. In my opinion, it's a great closing effect, with a certifiable "no way!" moment at the end.
And culturally, I think it will remain relevant for a few more years... at least until "The Solomon Key" movie has come and gone.

Re: Magic Castle Audition
I don't see the concern with ones material being "out of date". after all this IS the Castle we are talking about here and nearly all the magic presented there is "out of date".
I think the Cryptix routine and the Nature of fate are two of your strongest pieces and you should go with them

Re: Magic Castle Audition
I like the Da Vinci one with the cryptex. You might just take a look at the NY TImes best seller list or check out a book store to find out what the big books are these days.
I know there was that crappy book "The Secret" that everyone was fawning over. Basically it's "If you think it you can become it". Blah , Blah, Blah.
If you read the other Da Vinci book, "Angels and Demons" it has a whole thing in there about words being readable upside down and backwards. I always thought that would connect with playing cards being readable upside down.

Re: Magic Castle Audition
Philemon,
I haven't see all of your effects, but I was really impressed with your "Da Vinci's Cryptex." As far as pop culture goes and what's hot on the minds of the general public...who knows???...I tend to think that these things and other puzzles like them are still being thought about. Think about the movies that have been out like: National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets (w/ Nicholas Cage playing treasure hunter), Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (again...puzzles, treasure hunting, trying to figure out a solution or solve a code left behind centuries ago). Harry Potter books are still being talked about on the street when I'm busking so people can relate to it for sure.
I think the story surrounding the cryptex is pretty cool. It is suggested that the secret diaries of Leonardo da Vinci contained the original design of the cryptex. Perhaps you could probe deeper within that story line? Or just do what Dan Brown did and make something up and back it up with quasi-historical research.
Another thing is to examine the root of the word cryptex....it is derived from the word cryptology which is the practice and study of hiding information by encoding it. You could talk about wireless communications and the importance of security in everyday conversations. The packets of information being transmitted at high frequencies must be encoded using things like Fourier and Z-transforms as well as other complex digital encoding schemes. Then the received signals must be decoded and converted back to an analog signal for us to understand. These are just mathematical and digital signal processing "cryptexes" for bytes of information.
Not sure...maybe you can relate the two that way?
Talk about how it was as important back then as it is now to protect private conversations and communications.
Just trying to give you some ideas...
